A Dallas business owner took crime fighting into his own hands Monday night.
The owner of Gabby Hall Auto Parts on the 8300-block of CF Hawn Freeway spotted two men behind the business on his fenced-in property at about 11:00 p.m.
The owner tells officers that one of the men threw a car part at him and both took off running. The owner grabbed his shotgun and fired several times. Police say he shot a man in his 50's in the back. That man is at the hospital in police custody. He is expected to recover and face charges. Police tell NBC 5 News that he has a lengthy arrest record for theft and burglary.
Officers used K9's and a helicopter to search for the other man, but he got away.
Early on in the investigation, authorities believed the owner had the right to shoot in an effort to protect himself and his property.
Police say the business has been burglarized several times recently.
Police records show the business was broken into Saturday night. An unknown burglar stole a laptop computer.
On Sunday, a police report states someone stole copper from radiators, 24 wheels and four tires from the store.
The owner had been randomly checking on the property during overnight hours.
