Police officers in Grapevine have begun a manhunt for a prisoner that stabbed a Miami-Dade Police officer and escaped custody.
Grapevine police say two Miami-Dade officers were transporting prisoner Alberto Morales from Miami to Las Vegas for a court appearance or other official business. They had a connecting flight from DFW to Las Vegas, but, according to police, the Morales began acting strangely on the previously flight.
Officials believe the Miami-Dade officers rented a small SUV and were going to drive the rest of the way to Las Vegas with Morales rather than put him on another plane.
Around 11 p.m., the officers and Morales were in the parking lot of a Walmart at 1601 West Highway 114 when one of the officers got out of the vehicle and may have gone into the store. Police say Morales was able to get an unknown object and attack the lone officer guarding him, stabbing that officer once in the chest and three times in the back before fleeing.
The injured officer was transported to Parkland Hospital and is undergoing surgery, but is expected to recover.
A large manhunt is underway, involving multiple agencies, as Morales is a violent offender and considered dangerous.
At the time of escape, it's believed Morales was wearing a belly band with his hands shackled to it. Police believe he may still be in shackles.
"He is considered dangerous at this time and he is still at large, so we're seeking the public's assistance in finding him," Grapevine Police spokesman Lt. Barry Bowling said. "As far as we know he may still be in shackles, and the clothing description we had at the time we got the report was that he was in some grey shorts and a blue shirt."
Information obtained from the Miami-Dade inmate information portal showed charges of multiple counts of armed burglaries and/or assaults with deadly weapons.
"We don't think he could have gotten too far," Bowling said. "We're concerned about where he might be since he's at large and we do think he's still very dangerous."
Due to the ongoing search for Morales, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD announced they would take extra precautions for safety, including increased police patrols around GCISD schools and an "increased presence of police and district officials."
NBC 5 has crews on the scene to gather more information. As this is a developing story, details may change.
