The two Boston Marathon bombing suspects who engaged in a wild shootout with police early Friday have been identified as brothers who are from a region of Russia near Chechnya and had been in the United States for several years, law enforcement officials told NBC News.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, the brother wearing a white hat in video footage released by the FBI Thursday and believed to have planted at least one of the bombs, remains on the run and is considered armed and dangerous, authorities said.
The other brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who wore a dark hat in the videos, was killed in the shootout with an improvised explosive device strapped to his chest, authorities told NBC News.
The area where the brothers are from, the North Caucasus, is a center of militant and terrorist activity, none of which has been targeted at the West. Chechen separatists have largely focused their violence on Moscow. Those attacks included a 2002 hostage-taking raid in Moscow's theater, in which 129 hostages died and a 2004 hostage-taking in a school in Beslan that killed more than 330 people. Russian officials have said the North Caucasus militants are linked to al-Qaida.
Authorities say the brothers apparently lived in Cambridge, were in the United States legally, and had some kind of military experience. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has a Massachusetts driver's license.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, born in Kyrgystan, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, born in Russia, arrived in the United States with their family in either 2002 or 2003, authorities told NBC News.
Deana Beaulieu, 20, said she knew Dzhokhar Tsarnaev since the 7th grade. They attended the Community Charter School of Cambridge and Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, where, she said, no one could pronounce his name.
Beaulieu remembered him as a quiet boy who did little other than go to school and come home.
"You always have to be worried about the quiet ones I guess," Beaulieu said.
The last she saw him was after graduation in 2011. she said.
Beaulieu said she remembered Dzhokhar Tsarnaev having a sister, but knew nothing of a brother.
Robin Young, a Boston-area journalist whose nephew was friends with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, described him as a "light, airy, beautiful, curly-haired kid" who'd been on the wrestling team, attended the prom and won a scholarship.
"No one can believe that it's this young man," Young said in an interview on the Today show.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev appears on a list of recipients of $2,500 City of Cambridge 2011 City Scholarships for students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School who want to go to college, the Boston Globe reported.
Another former classmate, Sierra Schwartz told Today that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev "was very normal," adding, "This was an incredible shock to everyone."
Schwartz said she thought the guy in a picture released yesterday by the FBI looked like Dzhokhar Tsarnaev but her and her friends thought that "it was a coincidence" and they didn't notify authorities.
Beaulieu, Young or Schwartz all said they knew anything about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's brother.
The firefight began early Friday morning, under darkness, when the brothers robbed a 7-Eleven, shot a cop to death, stole an SUV and threw explosives out the window at police, authorities told NBC News. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev escaped in a car after his brother was killed.
One police officer was killed and another is in critical condition, officials said.
Police have placed the city of Boston and surrounding suburbs on virtual lockdown as they search for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and try to determine if the brothers left any bombs behind. Residents have been told to stay in their homes and not to open the door for anyone other than a properly identified law enforcement officer.
WNBC's Brynn Gingras and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
