A man and woman who burst into a Rowlett home Sunday afternoon were shot by someone inside the house who then fled before officers arrived, police said.
"I was seeing the flash of the muzzle, so it was a little unnerving," neighbor Vince Christianson said.
Christianson and his wife Joan said they first saw the man and woman using a heavy object to break down the front door. "And then I heard a bunch of cussing and, 'Just kill them all,'" Joan Christianson said.
Then, gunfire erupted.
Police said the man was shot several times in the stomach. He was rushed by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. The woman received a minor wound in the shoulder. She was treated and released at another hospital and taken to the police station for questioning.
The incident happened about 3 p.m. in the 9300 block of Shearer Street.
A woman who lived in the house hid with three young children in a closet, police said. None of them was injured.
It was the mother's older son, believed to be in his 20's, or the son's acquaintance who shot at the intruders, police said. But the son and the other man ran from the scene before police arrived, sparking a manhunt for them.
Officers found a sweater and a pistol a short distance away, police said.
It was not clear why they ran from the scene, leaving police unclear who were the victims and who were the suspects.
The woman who was shot spoke to arriving officers.
"She had made a comment that they were the victims of a robbery from the people in the house," said Rowlett police Sgt. Dean Poos. "But again, when John Q. Public is the victim of a crime, they usually call the police department and that's not what happened here. So that makes her story a little suspect as well."
Another neighbor, Erik Guzman, said he was watching television when he heard gunfire. "I thought it was fireworks at first," he said.
Guzman, 20, said he told his parents to lock their door. "It's crazy," he said. "This has never happened in this neighborhood. This is a good neighborhood."
