One person is in custody after a woman was murdered in a UT Southwestern campus parking garage.
Officers found the victim shot to death just before 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Karen Smith, a UT Southwestern executive assistant.
"Our hearts and condolences are with the family at this time," says UT Southwestern spokesman Russell Rian.
A suspect has since been taken into custody. Rian says no additional arrests are anticipated, because this is believed to be an isolated incident.
Dallas police say Smith violently lost her life in Parking Garage 2. Investigators are not yet saying what she'd been doing on campus or who pulled the trigger.
Police say a public service officer heard at least five shots coming from the parking garage around 7:35 p.m. on the UT Southwestern Medical Center Main Campus.
Officers scoured the ramp, floor-by-floor, and discovered Smith lying face up on the fourth level. Police report she'd been shot several times in her upper body and head.
Campus and Dallas police searched for the shooter and put the campus on lock down for three and a half hours.
Students got text message alerts warning them of the murder.
"We all just got text messages at the same time saying don't go outside, there's been a possible homicide," says student Dorothy Kupka.
The medical school hasn't seen a killing like this in some 30 years.
"It has not happened in the past three decades, " says UT Southwestern Medical Center spokesman, Russell Rian. "We were able to confirm that, we haven't had one in three decades."
Employees say the garage is primarily used by staff and researchers.
The incident remains under investigation by UT Southwestern police and Dallas police.
The campus and hospitals and clinics are open for normal business operations.
Right now, investigators do not believe this shooting is random.
