Fort Worth Gun Show Draws Big Crowds

NBC 5's Sara Story reports on one of the first gun shows in North Texas after the Tragedy in Sandy Hook. Fears over gun control regulation prompted many gun collectors to show up.

More Photos and Videos

Gun enthusiasts were met with long lines at the Will Rogers Memorial Center Saturday for The Original Fort Worth Gun Show.

"The attendance has just been over the top," said Tim Finucane, the show's owner.

Finucane said the gun show has been in his family for decades, but Saturday's crowd was a first. He said this crowd was driven by the uncertainty of gun laws in the wake of the school shooting in Sandy Hook, CT., that left 20 children and seven adults dead.

"The talk of restricting gun ownership, restricting ammo, restricting accessories, people are concerned," Finucane said. "They think they need to get out and buy it before the government takes it away."

President Barack Obama has formed a team that will look at gun control laws and possibly recommend new regulations.

Meanwhile, as the demand goes up, so do prices.

"Last year, I paid $345 for my .40 caliber hand gun. Now. I paid $557," said gun owner James Smith.

There were no protests visible to NBC 5 crews on Saturday.  However, a small crowd held a protest outside The Dulles Center in Virginia where "The Nations Gun Show" took place.

The Fort Worth gun show runs through the weekend -- and organizers expect as many people to show up on Sunday.

By the handfuls and piles, coats of all sizes poured into a Grapevine store to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. It was all part of Lewis Johnson's World-Class Coat Drive.

For seven-time NBC Olympic commentator, Lewis Johnson,  the man behind the drive his goal was to collect 500 coats.

"It's not just sitting back and watch things happen on the TV, but if you can actually help somebody out then we should take the opportunity to do so," Johnson said.

On the first day of collections, Johnson received more than 200 coats.

And the generosity of north Texans came through. With the help of athletes like Super Bowl champs Russell Maryland and Rickey Dudley, Olympians and volunteers packed more than 500 coats on Sunday.

"I knew that I was going to be doing some coat packing and unpacking today, I didn't realize it was going to be that many coats," Maryland said.

Collection boxes at seven drop off locations across the Metroplex were crucial in reaching the goal of 500 coats.

"This is a good couple of months later for to remember what happened there and for us not to forget and to just keep on giving," Pat Brolan, a donor said.

For donors like Cindy from Carrollton who first about the drive from NBC DFW, it's about helping those who nearly lost it all during the super storm.

"Everybody has a big heart; it just takes somebody to put it in motion," Ken Beam, a donor said.

All the donations will go to the New York Cares 24th Annual Coat Drive and Boys & Girls Clubs in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.

A 48-year-old Denton County woman is in a Dallas hospital after being shot by a family member overnight Saturday, according to the Denton County Sheriff's Dept.

Officers said someone called 911 from a home on the 1300-block of Oakcrest in Providence Village. The person hung up but deputies were dispatched to the address.

Deputies arrived at the house shortly after a second 911 call. They discovered the woman had been shot and a 50-year-old man, was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Paramedics flew the woman to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.  Her condition is not known.

A third adult woman was in the house at the time of the shooting, but she was not physically injured. The Dallas County Sheriff's Department said that woman is the couple's 23-year-old mentally disabled daughter. She is now with family members.

The Sheriff's office believed the daughter made the second phone call to 911.

Investigators believe the man shot himself after shooting the woman.

The shooting is under investigation, though police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the shootings.

Redskins Beat Cowboys 28-18 To Win NFC East

advertisement

After throwing three interceptions in his latest make-or-break defeat, Tony Romo shuffled across a silent locker room, grimacing and looking at the floor.  He dressed creakily. Merely putting on his dark socks appeared to be an ordeal.

Now comes a tougher task for the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback: processing his performance in a season-ending 28-18 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday night with the NFC East title on the line.

"I feel as though I let our team down," Romo said at his postgame news conference, his words deliberate, his stare blank. "Your legacy will be written when you're done playing the game," said Romo, whose three interceptions matched his total from the previous eight games combined.

"It's disappointing not being able to get over that hump," he added, "but I also know that football is the ultimate team sport and I need to continue to improve, and our football team does, to get there."
Needing a victory over the rival Redskins (10-6) to reach the playoffs, the Cowboys (8-8) finished at .500 for the second season in a row. They'll miss the postseason for the third consecutive year.
And this is the third time in the past five years that Dallas lost its regular-season finale when a win would have allowed it to keep playing.

"We have a big challenge ahead of us. (The Redskins) are, of course, in the tournament, and we have to sit at home and think about how to get in the tournament. This is very disappointing. We have players that have fought hard all year, but it did not end up the way we wanted," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "And one of my jobs is to evaluate and analyze and make decisions in the offseason that can help us be in better shape."

He can look at Washington to see how quickly things can change. Rookies Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris needed only four months to give the Redskins their first division title since 1999.
Griffin, the Heisman Trophy winner drafted second overall, ran for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Morris, the sixth-rounder from Florida Atlantic, ran for 200 yards and three TDs. He set the franchise single-season rushing record for the Redskins, who turned around the season behind their quarterback's talent and leadership to win seven straight games, becoming the first NFL team to make the playoffs after starting 3-6 since the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars.

After the final whistle, team captain Griffin walked off the field with a big smile, holding up his left index finger in a No. 1 gesture. Washington, which set a franchise record with only 14 turnovers this season (zero on Sunday), will host Seattle next Sunday.

Romo, meanwhile, was intercepted on each of Dallas' first two possessions. His last turnover was the one that bothered him the most: A poor throw was picked off by Rob Jackson when the Cowboys had a chance to drive for a winning score in the final minutes.  "That'll eat at me for weeks now," Romo said.

He almost became the first Dallas quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards in a season, but his career is instead further tainted by late-season disappointments. He also had Week 17 losses to the Philadelphia Eagles (44-6) in 2008 and the New York Giants (31-14) last year, along with a 1-3 record in playoff games (who can forget the botched hold?).

"There's been a couple of these games towards the end of the year that are critical games and we haven't gotten it done as a football team -- and Tony's certainly a part of that, but everybody's a part of that," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said.

On Sunday, Morris' 32-yard scamper gave the Redskins a 21-10 cushion with 10½ minutes left. Trying to play catch-up, Dallas pulled within three on a 10-yard TD pass to Kevin Ogletree and a 2-point conversion with 5:50 to play. But Morris' third touchdown, a 1-yard run with 1:09 left, sealed the outcome.

It didn't help matters for Dallas that receivers Dez Bryant (back) and Miles Austin (left ankle) got injured. Bryant, who Garrett said "really couldn't even walk," left after four catches for 71 yards.
"Missing those two guys is crucial," said Ogletree, who got a talking-to from Romo after the QB's first interception.

In the end, Dallas also was hurt by missing five injured starters on a defense that simply could not stop Morris. But what will be remembered mostly will be the play of Romo, who completed 20 of 31 passes for 218 yards, often facing pressure from what Garrett described as the way the Redskins "just kind of rolodexed those blitzes through."

"We know Romo doesn't like pressure in his face, so that was our big thing," Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said. "We had to get pressure up the middle. Not so much on the outside; keep him in the pocket. That's what we were able to do."

Notes: Cowboys KR-WR Dwayne Harris was on crutches after the game. Garrett said he had a lower leg injury. ... Dallas is 128-128 in regular-season games since the start of the 1997 season.

Obama, Clinton Most Admired Again: Poll

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are Americans' most admired man and woman, respectively, according to a new Gallup poll.

Admiration abounds for President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The duo are Americans' most admired man and woman — again — in a Gallup poll.

This is the 11th straight year that Clinton has been the most admired woman, while Obama has topped the list of the most admired men five years in a row.

First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were next in line behind Clinton on the list of women.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, Obama's recent Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney, evangelist Billy Graham, former President George W. Bush and Pope Benedict XVI followed Obama on the list of men.

Clinton has topped the list of the most admired women more than any other woman in the history of Gallup's poll — 17 times going back to her first year as first lady in 1993. She finished second to Mother Teresa in 1995 and 1996 and second to Laura Bush in 2001.

President Dwight Eisenhower ranked the most admired man 12 times, a Gallup record for men, followed by former presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, with eight first-place finishes each.

The USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted from Dec. 19 to 22. The "most admired" question was open-ended, asking Americans to name, without prompting, the man and the woman they most admired living in any part of the world.

Gallup first asked Americans to name their most admired man in 1946 and added the ranking of women two years later.

Frisco ISD Closes Tax Building Over Conn. Shooting

The Frisco school district tax building is closed for the winter break -- but not for reasons most parents are used to hearing.

A note taped to the building tells parents: "Due to the recent events in Connecticut, the FISD administration is requiring us to keep this building locked during the winter break."

In a statement sent late Friday night, Frisco Independent School District spokesman Jamie Driskill said the district decided to keep the building locked during the winter break when the building was not fully occupied because of "security concerns heightened by recent events."

The note on the building tells parents they can drop their payment in a drop box and apologized for the inconvenience.

Driskill said payments are collected daily. Payments are noted as being paid that day, and receipts are then mailed, he said.

The building's note caught Sunil Malik by surprise. The parent was coming to pay his taxes and get a receipt. He said he didn't understand why the building, which is near a middle school but not connected to the classrooms, was closed.

"It says it's a security concern, but the shootings were related to the kids, and it's not a school," he said.

Rejesh Chauhan, another parent, drove up to the building to pay his taxes. He read the sign and thought the note perhaps was a show of compassion for the recent tragedy in Connecticut. But he said he wasn't too pleased about having to drop his check into a drop box.

"If they put this note, I wish they would send a little sweet letter at home telling the exact reason, right?" he said.

Driskill said the district agreed that the note on the building was confusing, saying that a better solution would be determined in the future and communicated better.

The office will be open during its regular hours next week Wednesday through Friday and until noon on Monday, he said.

Investigators are trying to find the person who torched several classic cars at a business in Forney on Christmas Day.

Gerald Gauthier, owner of the Mustang Shop, said a friend called on Christmas morning to tell him that several cars parked outside his lot were on fire.

"He said, 'Your business, it looks like a war zone,'" he said.

Gauthier arrived to find three classic Mustangs gutted and several more with smashed windows.

"The first thing he did is, he went to destroy glass on all the vehicles," he said.

The vandal was caught on surveillance cameras installed outside Gauthier's business.

In the video, the person can be seen walking up to the vehicles, smashing the windows and then lighting something on fire. Shortly afterward, several of the vehicles can be seen erupting into flames.

"They're gone; they're completely gone. The '69 is somewhat salvageable, but these two here, they're just plain gone," said Gauthier while pointing to two classic Mustangs that were scorched and gutted by flames.

Gauthier said it has taken years to build up his business. What happened will set him back thousands of dollars, he said.

"I think someone that does this wouldn't hesitate to do it again to someone else," he said.

Now he just wants the person caught before he strikes again.

"I think somebody doesn't have any Christmas spirit," he said. "I don't have any words for it. I couldn't really even explain it."

Unions Move Ahead On AA-US Airways Merger

AA Merger Talks May Be at Critical Point

Pilots from both American Airlines and US Airways are taking part in four-party discussions with both companies.

APA On Standby for Merger

Leaders of the Allied Pilots Association are on standby, hoping they might be able to reach an agreement that could lead to a merger between American Airlines and US Airways.

More Photos and Videos

Leaders of the pilots union at Fort Worth based American Airlines have now approved a framework for a labor agreement if the airline merges with US Airways.

On the morning of Saturday, December 29, the Allied Pilots Association Board of Directors voted 11 to 5 to approve what's called a "memo of understanding."

The memo outlines temporary wages and work conditions if the two airlines merge. It also addresses seniority and other issues. Now American gets to look at it along with the pilots and the management at US Airways.

Unless all four parties agree to it, the Allied Pilots Association says a merger appears unlikely before American emerges from bankruptcy.  The pilots union cannot talk about specifics but said it wanted to have something done before AMR's Board of Directors meets a week from Wednesday.

Merger talks continue between the two airlines, and American Airlines is expected to emerge from bankruptcy in just months.

Click on this sentence for the statement from APA Communications Director Gregg Overman.

On Saturday, American Airlines released this statement:

"American Airlines remains actively engaged in discussions with US Airways, APA and USAPA to develop a framework for the terms of employment for pilots in the event of a merger.  The APA's proposal for this framework, approved this morning by its Board of Directors, is now subject to review and approval by American, US Airways and USAPA, which represents the US Airways pilots.  If agreed upon, a memorandum of understanding will assist our stakeholders, including the AMR Board, in making an informed decision as to whether a merger should be pursued.  This step comes as a result of American, in collaboration with the creditors committee, inviting the unions to take part in these discussions to better evaluate the costs of operational and pilot seniority integration.  We remain committed in our efforts to secure the best outcome for our financial stakeholders, our people and our customers."  Mike Trevino, AMR spokesman

The board of directors of American's parent company, AMR Corp., has scheduled a meeting Jan. 9 and could vote on a merger then, NBC 5 has learned.

People involved in the process stressed that many difficult details still must be ironed out before a merger vote can take place.

Company officials did not want to be quoted by name because of the sensitivity of the ongoing discussions.

The judge in charge of American's bankruptcy and the influential committee of creditors also would have to sign off on a deal.

American's three major unions -- representing pilots, flight attendants, and ground workers -- have already signed new labor agreements with the bankrupt airline. The talks now under way essentially involve new contracts with a merged company.

Combining workforces is full of potential pitfalls for each company. US Airways has not successfully combined labor groups since it merged with America West seven years ago. A merger with American could allow it to solve its current labor issues all at once -- or merely add to their complexity.

A merger would likely mean thousands of American employees would be pushed lower on the seniority list, but the value of a new deal could be a huge incentive. American pilots, for example, could add $100 million per year to their overall compensation, union insiders say.

It's unclear who would lead a combined airline. But analysts say a merger would likely push out American's top executive, Tom Horton, who has led the airline since it declared bankruptcy last November.

US Airways' executives have said if they win control, they would use American's brand name and keep its headquarters in Fort Worth.

Business was popping inside Party Warehouse on Camp Bowie Road in Fort Worth Saturday morning.  But party balloons aren't all that's being inflated there.

"We've had to raise prices," said owner Steve Steffgen.

Steffgen says his helium costs are up 300%.  He is charging his customers more on a dozen helium balloons.  From $6.99 to now $9.99.

Steffgen fills his customers in about the helium shortage which he said is a supply and demand issue.  Most of the demand comes from the medical industry.  An entrepreneur with three party stores is not on the priority list for helium.

"We've had to raise prices on helium tanks that we rent and we've even had to stop renting for a while," Steffgen said.

The shortage has forced Party Warehouse to become more creative, coming up with arrangements that use less helium or none at all.  Steffgen showed us "balloon columns" on display in his story.  They're decorative and festive and the balloons are filled with air, no helium.

Steffgen said people planning on picking up helium balloon arrangements for New Year's Eve not to do it too early in the day.  His and other stores are filling some balloons with 20% to 40% air to save helium, which means the balloons will deflate a few hours sooner.

No-Refusal Weekend Spurs Liquor Sales

Liquor stores across North Texas may owe their local police departments a round of drinks or, at the very least, a thank you.

Alcohol sales normally skyrocket in the days before folks toast the New Year. But sales this year may spike even higher because so many police departments are conducting no-refusal weekends.

During no-refusal periods, special patrols are out on interstates and major streets. The task forces include judges that can immediately authorize the suspension of licenses and force blood testing on drivers who refuse sobriety testing.

Liquor store managers say fear of the patrols is part of what is driving sales.

Managers at Specs in Dallas said 50 percent of their customers are purchasing alcohol for parties they're planning to have at home. Many are professional people who want to toast in the New Year with a few drinks without the risk of an encounter with a no-refusal patrol, they said.

Liquor stores will not have any special hours but expect crowds through closing on Saturday. They also expect sales to pick up again Monday because of last-minute shoppers.

A security guard detained Gooden until police arrived.

His wife died at a local hospital.

According to court records, Gooden is a convicted felon whose previous crimes include aggravated assault, burglary and driving while intoxicated.

AA-US Airways Merger Could Happen Next Month

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Desember 2012 | 20.41

American Airlines and US Airways could agree to merge as soon as early next month, creating the world's largest airline, company and union insiders say.

Unions are quietly negotiating new deals with a combined company, and if they and the airlines can agree on sticky issues such as seniority, a merger could be put on the fast track.

The board of directors of American's parent company, AMR Corp., has scheduled a meeting Jan. 9 and could vote on a merger then, NBC 5 has learned.

People involved in the process stressed that many difficult details still must be ironed out before a merger vote can take place.

Company and union officials did not want to be quoted by name because of the sensitivity of the ongoing discussions.

The judge in charge of American's bankruptcy and the influential committee of creditors also would have to sign off on a deal.

Leaders of the Allied Pilots Association have huddled in their Fort Worth headquarters since last week. One union official said the APA is "not close" to an agreement but talks are expected to continue Friday and into the weekend.

APA President Keith Wilson sent a letter to pilots Thursday evening, saying if the union does not agree to a new plan, there would likely not be a merger until after American exits bankruptcy.

Wilson acknowledged support for a merger is not unanimous among union leaders or airline executives.

"AMR management has not embraced the concept of expediting a merger before restructuring concludes and clearly wants to retain control of the corporation," he wrote.

Wilson also argued that an agreement on seniority before a possible merger should not be a requirement.

"No legal mechanism exists that would allow union-represented employees to interfere with a major transaction such as a merger," he said.

It's unclear who would lead a combined airline. But analysts say a merger would likely push out American's top executive, Tom Horton, who has led the airline since it declared bankruptcy last November.

US Airways' executives have said if they win control, they would use American's brand name and keep its headquarters in Fort Worth.

NBC 5's Ray Villeda contributed to this report.

Dallas police are searching for a burglar who is breaking into homes right under their noses.

The break-ins occurred on Christmas Eve just a couple of blocks from Dallas police headquarters.

"It's kind of wild that on Christmas Eve, someone would come into your house and steal what you've earned," Billy MacLeod said.

His home on Akard Street was one of at least two broken into in the Cedars neighborhood. In both cases, the burglar kicked in the front glass door.

At MacLeod's house, the thieves stole most of his Christmas presents, along with small electronics and jewelry.

"They came in, they opened up all the presents," he said. "They took what they wanted. They probably weren't in here very long."

But the burglar didn't steal his family's Christmas spirit, MacLeod said.

"We weren't going to let a thief take our Christmas, so what we did was, we cleaned up after the police left. We boarded the house up. We went out shopping for each other," he said. "We wrapped our presents in secret. We still had our Christmas morning."

But what the burglar left behind has the radio salesman thinking more like a detective.

"I don't know about being Colombo or Matlock or Perry Mason, but I did find a clue, and I think it points directly to who did this," he said.

The burglar left behind a delivery invoice printed on the morning of Dec. 24. Neighbors also report seeing a white delivery truck in front of his house.

NBC 5 is not releasing the name of the company to allow police time to investigate the invoice.

MacLeod said he found it next to a box of chocolates that had been eaten and some wrapping paper.

The other victim said the burglar opened a bottle of apple juice at her house, as well as a bottle of liquor, and appears to have made a mixed drink while rummaging through her house.

A man was shoved onto subway train tracks and killed Thursday evening in New York City, in the second such fatal subway push attack in the city in a month.

Police are looking for a woman who was seen mumbling to herself before she allegedly pushed the unsuspecting man to his death in front of an oncoming No. 7 train at a Queens subway station Thursday evening, police said.

The man was standing on the northbound platform of the 40th Street and Queens Boulevard elevated train when police say the woman walked up behind him and pushed him onto the tracks. Witnesses told police the man had his back to the woman and didn't appear to notice her. No words were exchanged.

The man died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

Witnesses told police the female suspect had been walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before sitting down, alone, on a wooden bench near the north end of the walkway. When the train pulled into the station shortly after 8 p.m., the woman got up off the bench and pushed the man, according to witness statements.

The suspect then fled the platform, running down a flight of stairs to the turnstile area and down a second flight to Queens Boulevard. It's unknown where she went from there. Police released surveillance video of her running onto the street.

The suspect is described as being a heavyset woman about 5 feet 5 inches tall with brown or blond hair. She was wearing a white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers at the time of the incident.

"I heard it. One of my customers was on train and heard it going over body," Jiovanni Briones, who works near the scene, told NBC 4 New York.

Earlier this month, Naeem Davis, a 30-year-old deli worker, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly pushing another man off a Midtown subway platform to his death.

Ki-Suk Han, 58, was stuck by a southbound Q train after being pushed off the platform at the 49th Street station Dec. 3.

A man gunned down Thursday in Chicago marked what police say is the city's 500th homicide of the year. It's a dubious distinction that hasn't occurred since 2008, when the city ended the year with 512 murders.

Chicago surpassed 2011's 435 murder total in October.

Police are releasing few details about the shooting, which happened around 9 p.m. on the city's west side. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died.

Police said Chicago's 499th homicide victim was a man who died after he was shot at least four times – including in the face and chest – in a Gage Park neighborhood alley Wednesday night on the Southwest Side.

Frederico Martinez died from gunshot wounds he suffered near his home, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Police said the 32-year-old Martinez was standing with a female in an alleyway down the block from his home when a light-colored pick-up truck approached and somebody inside opened fire on the two just before 10 p.m.

Martinez was shot in the face, chest and both arms and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 10:41 p.m., authorities said.

Behind the troubling statistics, flashing lights and crime tape, communities throughout the city are searching for solutions.

"There's no magic spell that can end it. It's a matter of people and neighborhoods coming together and deciding that it's not going to happen," said neighbor Robert Grider.

Larry Pickens, who is running in the special election to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. in his now vacated 2nd Congressional seat, offered a few suggestions Thursday: "Teaching our young people alternative dispute resolution, non-violent strategies for addressing conflict and getting guns off the street."

Family Still Searching for Lost Grandmother

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Desember 2012 | 20.41

Mola Lenghi, NBC 5 Arlington Reporter

The Arrocha family's Christmas was a little less bright this year. They're still searching for 77-year-old Maria Arrocha, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. She's been missing since Dec. 18.

Police and an Arlington family are still searching for a 77-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease who has been missing for more than a week.

Maria Arrocha has not been heard from since she wandered out of her Arbor Lane home on Dec. 18. She lives with her daughter at the home at New York Avenue and Park Row Lane.

The Arrochas said their Christmas spirits were down this year.

"It was a different day -- no celebration," said Martin Arrocha, her son. "We couldn't eat. We couldn't have dinner. It was a very difficult day."

Maria Arrocha has not been able to take much-needed medications, and her family fears she is lost, cold and confused.

"This is like a nightmare," grandson Ricardo Arrocha said. "We don't know what to do. We go out and look for her, but with no results yet."

Maria Arrocha is Hispanic, stands about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs approximately 180 pounds. She has black and gray hair and brown eyes.

"She was always hugging us, kissing us. She was the best," Ricardo Arrocha said.

The family has been distributing fliers in both English and Spanish throughout North Texas. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to her location.

"We're going to keep trying, passing out fliers, talking to the people, talking to the police," Martin Arrocha said.

Authorities urge people to search around their properties -- backyards, garages and sheds -- because Arrocha is likely wandering and disoriented.

Arlington police say they continue to receive tips but nothing has panned out. They are relying on the public's help in this case, stressing that even the smallest tip could be enough to help bring Maria Arrocha back home.

Anyone who has seen Maria Arrocha is asked to call police by dialing 911 or 817-459-5600 and stay with her until officers arrive.

Body Shops Busy After Winter Storm

Making the Best Out of Frigid Temps

While kids flock to Flagpole Hill to slip and slide, others take the freezing temps in stride.

Wrecker services are working overtime in wake of Tuesday's storm, picking up damaged cars and getting them to body shops in cities such as Frisco.

"They're asking us if we're open and once we say yes, they say, 'Well we're on our way,'" said Jason Brassfield at Herb's Paint and Body.

The northern part of the Metroplex -- Grayson, Collin and Denton counties -- is still digging out from the Christmas Day storm, which could possibly linger for the rest of the week.

Wednesday's sunshine began the meltdown, but temperatures remain cold enough that many of the areas are refreezing. And the biggest problem areas Wednesday night were side streets and neighborhoods that did have any trucks plowing or spreading materials to improve traction on the roads.

The current volume of wrecked cars may only be a precursor of what's expected in coming days as more drivers hit the roads in areas that received as much as 6 inches of snow.

"When you factor in the volume of the cars coming in compounded with the holidays -- you know, a lot of these vendors shut down -- it becomes harder to get parts," said Ron Grafflin at Service King. "With the influx of cars, we may have a lot of cars here for a month."

Sandy Relief Center Looted on Christmas

advertisement

A relief center for storm-ravaged New Yorkers was looted and vandalized overnight on Christmas by thieves who stole donated supplies and destroyed items intended for Sandy victims.

The center on Staten Island has been an oasis of hope for those residents of the hard-hit borough who lost their homes in the storm nearly two months ago. The supplies are housed under a tent, blocked off with barricades and manned by volunteers, but the workers left the center unattended on Christmas night.

Thieves made off with baby gear, baby blankets, baby clothes, winter clothing and warm bedding.

Losing those items is "a punch in the stomach," said Mike Hoffman, who heads up the Staten Island volunteer team known as Boots on the Ground.

"I had a couple leftover propane stoves that were donated," said Hoffman. "One was just ripped open, they didn't even take it. They just ripped it open and destroyed it. So that's one less family now that can cook a warm meal."

And with a winter storm heading toward the area again on Wednesday, the center had been stocking crucial supplies.

"People are here struggling, suffering," said Sandy victim Eric Slick.

The people who busted into the center stole supplies from the shelves, ripped open bags of dog food and swiped jackets off hangers.

Volunteers running the site believe thieves plan to return the merchandise for money. They are now looking to relocate the relief center indoors.

From 3D Printing to a New Superman: A Look Ahead to 2013

2013 will be a year of more rapid advances in technology, lingering worries about the economy and a search for solutions about climate change. Here's a look at what to expect in the coming 12 months:

Technology

We've come to expect a constant flow of new and exciting pieces of technology: faster and more powerful smartphones, applications that help us solve our personal problems, more ways to share our lives online, the ability to watch TV just about anywhere. That will continue to happen in 2013, with another new iPhone, dirt-cheap tablets, apps that perform electrocardiograms and read fingerprints instead of passcodes, the emergence of social-media storefronts and watching television on your Xbox.

Next year will also likely see a wave of innovations moving into the mainstream. That includes 3D printing, virtual grocery stores, and ultra high-definition TVs and an ingestible sensor that checks whether you're taking your medication correctly.

But what happens after that? In laboratories, board rooms and test areas around the country, visionaries are preparing a new generation of devices that seem Utopian but are on the verge of becoming not only viable, but, like the many recent breakthroughs we now take for granted, could forever change the way we interact with the world.

Patrick Tucker, deputy editor of The Futurist magazine, views 2013 as the precipice of a monumental leap forward in which we use technology to cull and share so much data about our behavior, travel and thoughts that "the randomness of human life begins to evaporate in a perfect organized system of units in movement."

Among the "off the radar" developments that Tucker finds most compelling is telepathic headgear – known as EEG helmets – that use brain waves to move objects by remote control. Researchers have already used them to move Roomba vacuum cleaners and model airplanes, but the military is also exploring ways to deploy them. The goal is for soldiers to communicate through "synthetic telepathy" on the battlefield or stealth missions, possibly by Morse code. "No one is yet sure how we're going to use it, but if you look at how quickly the capability is ramping up, you can see it coming in 2013 in a surprising way," Tucker said.

Tucker is also excited about a device that can detect a variety of illnesses and bacteria. The goal is to ultimately develop a real-life version of the Tricorder like the one used by Dr. McCoy on Star Trek.

The day isn't far off, Tucker says, when epidemiologists will be able to track the spread of illnesses. More distant, but very possible, is the ability to have smartphones to predict your chances of getting sick, and steer you away from potential threats. "This will be a big part of our lives in the next 10 years," he said.

Also poised for breakthrough is the automated car – one that doesn't require a driver. The federal government has embraced the technology, under development by automakers and Google, and testing is underway in Nevada, California and Florida. Early versions would require someone to be inside the car, but researchers are working on prototypes that run by themselves. Once the crash rate is brought to levels below those of traditional cars, the legislative impediments will disappear and automated cars will become a part of mainstream life, allowing people to drive into the city, park it in a remote location and have it pick them up at the end of the day, Tucker said. "As long as safety records continue to improve, 2013 could be a real watershed year," he said.

The Economy

Is 2013 the year when the American economy finally begins to turn around? For now, much of the answer lies with the president and Congress, who are trying to negotiate out of the fiscal cliff, which will determine who'll bear the burden of tax increases and federal spending cuts. After that come the the thornier issues of getting a handle on the federal budget deficit, rewriting the tax code and cutting entitlements.

Washington has yet to prove that it's ready to tackle those problems.

Many analysts, including members of a CNBC panel, believe that the unemployment rate won't change much in 2013. "The unemployment rate will likely stay around 8 percent, if not get worse, particularly if we go over the fiscal cliff," Maria Bartiromo predicted.

Jim Cramer said he worried about the possibility of mortgage rates rising in 2013. But he also sees a silver lining in the year's worst natural disaster: The tens of billions of dollars in damage wrought by Hurricane Sandy could in the end help the economy by boosting the need for new construction and infrastructure fixes.

Another positive sign: Housing prices in much of the country appear to be rising, and vacant homes are filling, the Economist pointed out.

There is an encouraging development in American manufacturing, which has long been in decline. With oil prices rising and a boom in domestic energy production, along with more pliable unions and increased productivity, North America could become a destination for companies looking to innovate. An example is GE's long-dormant Appliance Park in Louisville, which the company has revamped as a place to foster new product development, such as energy-efficient water heaters and high-tech refrigerators. The practice of outsourcing work is no longer a viable business model, GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt said. Similar discoveries are being made by the Whirlpool appliance company, the Otis elevator maker and Wham-O, maker of the Frisbee.

The Environment

In early December, Brad Werner, a geophysicist at the University of California at San Diego, gave a presentation at the American Geophysical Union's annual meeting entitled "Is Earth F****d?" The title caused a stir, but not the contents. Because, in the earth science world, that question underlies all serious conversations about the environment.

What does it mean when Arctic polar ice recedes to record levels, when heat waves last two weeks and rain storms pack heavier wallops? Is the climate changing? Can we stop it? Can we adapt? Those questions will likely get more attention in 2013, particularly in the context of Hurricane Sandy and the record drought that decimated farms across the nation's midsection.

"There's a sense that things are getting away from us," said science writer Andrew Freeman, who attended the AGU conference, but not Werner's lecture. "The debate in the community isn't, 'Is it happening or not?' but between people who think it will be somewhat manageable and people thinking that unless we do something in the next 10 years we're, well, we're F'd."

Freeman, an analyst at Climate Central, which tracks the effects of climate change, is of two minds: He's uneasy about these developments but excited by the prospect of learning new things about how weather works.

Freeman says it appears that the loss of sea ice in the Arctic is adding so much heat to the atmosphere that it's affecting the jet stream in a way that causes weather events, like heat waves and storms, to become stuck. "That's one of the questions we're going to be asking this year: What will be the results of having by far the lowest sea ice extent observed in our records going back a century," he said.

For the winter, that may mean more snow. For the spring and summer, it may mean longer heat waves. But no matter what happens, Freeman said, people will be asking the same question: "How can we prepare our infrastructure and society to deal with this?"

For New York and New Jersey and other places wrecked by Sandy's storm surges, that means changing land-use plans and considering building natural and man-made barriers. In Chicago, engineers have come up with a "permeable pavement" to deal with heavy rainfall. In San Francisco, where water levels in the bay are rising, officials are exploring new shoreline development regulations.

Entertainment

Fans of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Pink, One Direction, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood have good reasons to look forward to 2013, when all will go on tour in support of new albums.

If you miss the HBO series Sex and the City, which ran from 1998 to 2004, you may -- or may not -- want to tune into the CW Network's attempt at reviving the brand with The Carrie Dairies, which follows a teenaged Carrie Bradshaw through the 1980s.

This may also be the year that Justin Timberlake ends a prolonged detour into television and movies and returns to music, said Brody Brown, a reporter for Us Magazine. Timberlake, whose last album came out in 2006, won't say for sure. "We're waiting on a confirmation, but he's been hush hush," Brown said.

The year's first expected blockbuster comes in March, with the release of The Great and Powerful Oz, starring James Franco. The 2013 summer season will begin relatively early, Brown said, with Ironman 3, with Robert Downey Jr. back in the title role. The blockbuster with perhaps the most risk, and arguably the most anticipation, is Man of Steel, a remake of the Superman franchise starring a relatively unknown actor named Henry Cavill. It comes out in June.

The entertainment world is as much about celebrity watching as it is about actually getting entertained, and at this point there is no bigger celebrity story to unfold in 2013 the Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy. Forecasting abounds in all aspects of the impending birth. Boy? Girl? Twins? Names? Nanny? Expect those discussions to dominate the celebrity magazines for the next eight months.

Closer to home, speculation abounds about the marital plans for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and Pitt ex-wife Jennifer Aniston and her boyfriend, Justin Theroux. They're considered rivals, and the people who care about these sort of things are watching to see who ties the knot first.

Road crews are preparing for the possibility of a white Christmas.

A powerful storm system is expected to bring rain and snow to North Texas.

Rain on Christmas morning is expected to mix and eventually change to snow by the evening. Up to 1 inch of snow is possible for Dallas and Fort Worth on Christmas afternoon and evening.

However, 1 inch to 3 inches of snow is possible toward Denton and McKinney and areas near the Red River.

The Texas Department of Transportation, which monitors more than 10,000 lane miles of roads in North Texas, will have crews keeping an eye on the weather and the ground temperature.

The agency will have roadrunners, crews that look for bad spots on the roads, out in the area. They will check on bridge railings and high points that freeze first to see if there are any sign of freezing or sticking, TxDOT spokeswoman Michelle Releford said.

Releford said the ground temperature will ultimately dictate if the expected rain or snow sticks to the ground.

If needed, about 400 crews are available for TxDOT's 16-county North Texas region. Fort Worth and Dallas each have 30 trucks ready to roll.

Some drivers say the idea of a white Christmas outweighs any worries about dangerous road conditions.

"I'm originally from Illinois, so [I'm] not scared of bad weather," said Ashley Ruiz, of Dallas. "A little dusting of snow isn't going to keep me away from friends and family on Christmas."

But other drivers will be on the lookout for ice.

Jerdal Whitaker said he learned how to drive on the ice while going to school in Lubbock but Dallas drivers aren't quite used to it yet.

"You definitely have to worry about everyone while you're driving, especially out here," he said. "We're not used to the weather that comes, especially when it's ugly, so you definitely have to drive slow."

Marlon Bible's car has big rims and low-profile tires. His LED wheels even light up, showing off every color of the spectrum. But they don't do well in ice or snow.

"I'm just hoping it's not ice. If it is, I'm going to be smart and keep it parked," he said.

The same system that is set to move into North Texas beginning Monday night dropped a significant snowfall on portions of California over the weekend.

NBC 5's Ben Russell, Samantha Davies and Ken Ken Kalthoff contributed to this report.
