The father of two girls says a man broke into the family's Cockrell Hill apartment early Friday morning and touched his daughters.

The father told police and reporters that his daughters were watching TV in the front room, where they had been sleeping on a mattress, when a man entered the residence through a back window at about 5:15 a.m. Friday.

The girls said the man told them he was a friend of the family and offered to take them to the store to get candy. At some point the man began touching the girls over the clothing, and one of the girls called out to her father.

As the father came into the room, the man exited the front door.  The father chased the man into the parking lot but was unable to catch him. After the man disappeared, the father called police.

The father said it was dark and all happened very fast and that he didn't get a very good look at the man, though he did provide police with a partial description.  He also adds that the man, despite his claim, was not a friend of the family.

Police said the girls, ages 9 and 5, were taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.  Neither were injured. Police said the man was inside the home for about 10 minutes before he was chased out.

Cockrell Hill police confirmed the man tried to get the girls to leave with him and that there was physical contact between the intruder and the girls, but that that contact was not sexual and they were not injured. Police are continuing to investigate and have classified the incident as burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another felony.  The charge is a first degree felony punishable with a possible life sentence and a fine of $10,000.

The incident took place at the Cedar Square Apartments at 500 Andrews Avenue.

NBC 5's Mark Schnyder contributed to this report.

It was initially believed that the girls were sleeping at the the time the man entered the apartment, that was not the case. We regret the error.

Pizza Delivery Robberies Put People on Edge

advertisement

Dallas pizza delivery people have been robbed three times in the past week, two of them Thursday night.

The robberies in Oak Cliff and Pleasant Grove have stores and neighbors on edge.

According to police reports, around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, a driver for the Pizza Hut in the 2200 block of South Buckner was held up at gunpoint in the 10300 block of Whitingham Drive by two people.

The driver lost $310 cash.

Whitingham neighbor Gerald Green said pizza drivers should not carry so much cash.

"That's not a good idea to have that much money on you, especially around here," he said.

Pizza Hut store manager Leticia Contreras said drivers are trained to carry only a small amount of change and the cash was the driver's personal money.

She said safety is the top priority in pizza delivery and some destinations may become off limits, especially at night.

"I remember at one point, we tried to order a pizza where I stay at," Green said. "They wouldn't deliver in this neighborhood for a while."

At about 9:30 p.m., a driver for the Domino's at 4800 Sunnyvale was robbed at gunpoint in the 4600 block of Stokes Street near Interstate 45 and Loop 12.

According to a police report, the people ran up on the driver in the dark from a vacant lot beside a delivery address that neighbors say is vacant house.

"The one that used to stay in there, he was an old guy and he passed away, so it's kind of been different people coming in and out of there," neighbor Marcell Dobin said.

His wife worries that drivers won't return to deliver the pizza that their children enjoy.

"They should feel safe to come over here," Loretta Dobin said.

Manager Isaac Soto at the Sunnyvale Domino's store said drivers are told to drive away from homes they discover to be vacant.

He said certain apartment complexes are off-limits. Deliveries to others are made only at the front gate and deliveries are refused to some places at night.

Last Saturday night, a driver from a Domino's at 2551 Fort Worth Ave. was beaten up for his pizzas in the 1900 block of Shaw Street, according to police reports.

Aside from the fact they all involve pizza, detectives do not believe the cases are related, Dallas police spokeswoman Melinda Gutierrez said.

No arrests have been made.

Domino's corporate spokesman Tim McIntyre said safety is a top priority for the company, which delivers more than a million times per day. An increase in online ordering has reduced the use of cash, he said.

He issued the following statement:

We work with local law enforcement to help us identify potential trouble spots in any community. Our goal is to deliver to every address within our individual trade areas, but sometimes we've been forced by incidents to take other actions, from curbing deliveries after a specific time of night or eliminating individual streets altogether. If a store has a restricted section within its delivery area, the owner is required by our policy to review it annually to see if it can/should be reopened.

Arlington Twins Play in Cotton Bowl

Smack Talk at Cotton Bowl Tailgating

There was plenty of smack talk in the parking lots around Cowboys Stadium as Aggie and Sooner fans tailgated before the Cotton Bowl Friday.

More Photos and Videos

At Friday night's Cotton Bowl Classic at Cowboys Stadium, the Joeckel family of Arlington will be rooting for Texas A&M.

It's an easy choice considering twin brothers Matt and Luke Joeckel both play on the A&M football team.

"It makes for fun weekends," said Dave Joeckel, the twins' father. "Excitement, that's probably the best way to describe how I feel. And pride that my sons are playing in the Cotton Bowl. They've worked hard. This is a great reward for that hard work."

At the 77th annual Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma, Matt and Luke Joeckel will get to play before their hometown crowd.

The Joeckel twins have been playing football since grade school, when their father was their coach.

"They've always been very competitive. They were always doing something competing against each other and I think it helped them both," said Dave Joeckel.

The twins then played at Arlington High School. Luke Joeckel, the lineman, blocked for his brother Matt Joeckel, the quarterback.

"Luke is kind of the big, more quiet type," said Reecanne Joeckel, their mother. "Matt is more of the talkative, quarterback type. But in a lot of ways they're very similar."

When it came time to select a school, one thing came as no surprise.

"We always knew they'd end up going to the same place," said Dave Joeckel.

One thing that wasn't expected was where they chose to go.

"I played [football] at [Texas] Tech," said Dave Joeckel. "[The twins] were Red Raiders their whole life growing up."

Reecanne Joeckel said the family had a bit of explaining to do.

"Being Texas Tech people, friends were like, 'How did you let that happen?' But, [Texas A&M] was the perfect fit," she said.

And so are the twins.

At College Station, Luke and Matt Joeckel have exact same class schedule, they travel together and they're roommates.

"They get along really well, considering they're brothers and considering they spend that much time together," their mother said. "They're each other's best friends."

Arlington police say they have found the body of a 77-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease who disappeared last month.

Maria Arrocha wandered out of her Arbor Lane home at New York Avenue and Park Row Lane on Dec. 18.

Arlington police found her body in a wooded area near 1500 E. Abram St. on Thursday afternoon. The Tarrant County medical examiner positively identified the woman as Arrocha on Friday.

Her death was determined to be caused by exposure to the elements.

Martin Arrocha, her son, said he had mixed emotions, saying he was "a little bit angry because we couldn't find her in time, relief because we know she's in a better place today."

Police officers were working closely with volunteer group Search One Rescue Team, which uses K-9s, as part of an ongoing effort to find Maria Arrocha when her body was discovered.

Her family had been searching for Arrocha since her disappearance. They passed out fliers in both English and Spanish throughout North Texas and spent Christmas looking for her.

The only K-9 working for the Denton County Sheriff's Office was found dead on Friday.

Chico, a Belgian Malinois, was reported missing on Dec. 20 in rural Collin County. The dog's handler said the dog ran out when a windstorm that day blew open his fence.

Denton County Sheriff William Travis told NBC 5 that a landowner noticed a dog near his livestock. The landowner was worried about his livestock and shot the dog, not knowing it was the missing K-9.

Travis said the man was distraught once he learned the dog was a K-9 with the sheriff's office.

The sheriff said the dog was not wearing the collar that identifies it as a member of law enforcement.

The landowner will not face any charges.

Travis said the DCSO is planning a funeral and is plans to acquire another K-9.

AA Flight Attendants Sign Off on Potential Merger

In a letter to American employees, CEO Tom Horton said the Fort Worth-based airline is continuing to evaluate whether a merger would be in the bankrupt company's best interests.

The flight attendants' union at American Airlines signed off late Thursday on a merger plan with US Airways.

Laura Glading, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, said she signed a memorandum of understanding, which details seniority and other issues -- essentially how employees at both airlines would work together in the event of a merger.

"I hope it clears the path for a quick and efficient merger," she said.

She said she could not discuss specifics.

Meanwhile, earlier Thursday, American Airlines announced it will decide whether it also supports the merger in "a matter of weeks," CEO Tom Horton said.

In a letter to American employees, Horton said the Fort Worth-based airline is continuing to evaluate whether a merger would be in the bankrupt company's best interests.

"While I cannot give you a precise date, I can tell you that we expect to bring this to conclusion in a matter of weeks," Horton wrote.

If the two companies do combine, it would create the world's largest airline.

The flight attendants' move follows a similar action by pilots on Saturday.

The Allied Pilots Association also signed off on its own plan to combine workforces.

The Board of Directors of American Airlines' parent company, AMR Corp., is scheduled to meet Jan. 9, but it appeared a merger plan would not be ready to consider by then.

Managers of US Airways have said if they are successful in gaining control of the new carrier, they would keep its headquarters in Fort Worth and keep the American name. The US Airways brand would go away.

Analysts have said a merger is the best way for American to compete against rivals United and Delta.

Hurst Officer Fired After "Embarrassing" Video

Teen Files Complaint in Hurst Officer Video

The family of Andrew Rodriguez filed a complaint against the Hurst police officer they say used excessive force violating the teen's civil rights in a video posted on YouTube.

Mother Wants Hurst Police Officer's Badge

The mother of 17-year-old seen in a YouTube video being kneed in the back and cursed at by a Hurst police officer says she wants the officer fired and charged with aggravated asault.

More Photos and Videos

Hurst police officer Disraeli Arnold has been fired after being recorded on video threatening a teen and using profane language.

Arnold was recorded in November running to assist an officer subduing a teenager and ultimately kneeing the teen in the back of the head while yelling and threatening him.

The teen's mother, Kelly Pope, didn't object to her son being arrested, just the force used to take the teen into custody.

"He [her son] knows that he handled it badly at first, that he should have been a little more cooperative. But, you know, the second officer -- there was no reason for it," Pope said in November. "He (Arnold) comes up at a jolting sprint, kneed him in the back of the head and, as you can see on the video, he says, 'If you move I'm going to [expletive] kill you.'"

While the teen was in custody and being escorted to a police car, Arnold then paraded in front of the teen's friend, who was recording the arrest, and said, "You got it on tape? Arnold, 654!"

Using the video as evidence, the teen's mother filed a complaint with the Hurst Police Department that led to an internal affairs investigation. The mother said she hoped the officer would either turn in his badge or be fired.

Dashcam video released several days later showed the teen, prior to Arnold arriving at the scene, arguing with Officer Miguel Jimenez and resisting arrest -- a offense for which he was charged.

On Thursday, Hurst police said Arnold was "indefinitely suspended for violations of Hurst Police Department General Orders and Civil Service rules relating to his actions on Nov. 20, 2012" and "an internal affairs investigation was conducted for violations ... to include the unnecessary use of force, being disrespectful to a citizen, and the use of indecent, profane, or harsh language in the performance of official duties."

Despite Pope's claim of excessive force, the internal affairs investigation determined the amount of force used by Arnold was reasonable since he believed Jimenez was struggling to subdue the teen.

The investigation did find, however, that Arnold was disrespectful to a citizen and "used indecent, profane, and harsh language in the performance of his official duties, and conducted himself in a manner which brought discredit to himself and the Hurst Police Department."

"You can't help but be embarrassed -- not only for the officers that work in our department, but for anybody in the law enforcement profession," Hurst Assistant Chief Steve Niekamp said in November. "You just expect when an officer shows up, they're going to be in charge. You don't want the foul language, anything that looks like it might be overreaction. You just want to be professional, calm and in control of the scene."

Prior to the department's latest ruling, Arnold had been placed on administrative leave.

Arnold had been with the department for four years and, according to a performance assessment and disciplinary file released by Hurst police after the incident, he met or exceeded police standards in nearly every assessment. The document also noted in May, 2010, that "Officer Arnold's enthusiasm may make him overzealous at times, which can cloud his judgment when it comes to policy, procedure and tactics. Sometimes he needs to step back and see the big picture and risks involved."

Arnold has 10 days to appeal the termination.

NBC 5's Scott Gordon contributed to this report.

Have you seen a link on Facebook or Twitter that says you can earn two free Southwest Airlines tickets?

Well, don't click on it.

Southwest Airlines said it's working with its legal department to have the links and ads removed from various social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Southwest spokesperson Brooks Thomas said the Dallas-based carrier is not offering two free tickets.

"If it's not in an email officially from us, if it doesn't have Southwest.com in it or if it doesn't take you to a southwest.com or blog.southwest.com property, then it's usually erroneous and a big red flag not to click on it," Thomas said.

The scheme isn't new. It also popped up on social media in late 2011.

Southwest Airlines said if you have already clicked on the link, it's a good time to reset your password.

Lewisville police are looking for two men who sexually assaulted a 32-year-old woman on New Year's Eve.

Investigators said the woman was jogging at approximately 7:30 p.m. at L.L. Woods Park in the 1000 block of Arbour Way.

The two men hid behind a tree and confronted the woman when she ran past them, police said. Investigators said she tried to fight off the men but failed and was knocked unconscious. The men dragged the woman away from the jogging trail and sexually assaulted her.

Lewisville police say it's unusual and extremely dangerous for two men to be working together.

"This is the first one that we know of that has occurred like this," Capt. Kevin Deaver said.

"It's somewhat unusual that there were two attackers. That's real unusual for this type of offense, so that's something that's alarming and that's why we're reaching out to the public," he said.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to contact Lewisville Police at 972-219-TIPS (8477) or Denton County Crime Stoppers at 800-388-TIPS (8477).

Victim's Mother: Officers Should Be Fired Over DWI

advertisement

A woman whose daughter was killed by a drunken Fort Worth police detective three years ago says the department hasn't learned its lesson after yet another officer was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of drunken driving.

"It's been three years ago in December," Stella Lopez said. "That should have been a wake-up call."

Her daughter, Sonia Baker, was killed in December 2009 when Officer Jesus Cisneros' car slammed into hers.

Cisneros was convicted of intoxication manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was on his way home after drinking with other officers at a Fort Worth bar, police acknowledged at the time.

After the tragedy, Police Chief Jeffrey Halstead ordered the entire department to undergo alcohol awareness training.

Early Wednesday morning, Nicolas Ramirez, a Fort Worth DWI enforcement officer, was arrested in Westlake on a DWI charge. Blood alcohol tests showed he had drank more than twice the legal limit.

Nearly 20 Fort Worth officers have been arrested in drunken-driving cases in the past four years.

Ramirez's arrest follows the DWI arrest of Maj. Paul Henderson last month in Parker County. Henderson was Halstead's chief of staff and had spoken out against drunken driving in the past.

Henderson was demoted but still works for the department. His criminal charges are still pending.

"What is it going to take? Police officer after police officer after police officer," Lopez said. "What is it going to take?"

Lopez said Halstead should fire officers for drunken driving instead of reprimanding them.

"Halstead needs to change the rules," she said. "He needs to fire these people (so they) know what it feels like to lose your job because of the almighty alcohol."

Halstead declined to comment Wednesday but has said he judges each case individually.

In a written statement after Ramirez's arrest, Halstead apologized.

"It is extremely troubling that one of our police officers, especially a DWI enforcement officer, has been arrested in this manner," he said.

Halstead promised the matter "will be handled expeditiously."

Lopez acknowledged that Halstead can't be a babysitter for every officer but said drunken-driving convictions should lead to automatic termination.

"Police officers, of all people, are out there teaching us, teaching our young kids to trust them," she said. "And this happens? Who are we to trust?"

Sandy Hook Students Head to "Safest School in America"

advertisement

Sandy Hook Elementary students return to class Thursday morning for the first time since 20 first-graders and six women were killed in the Newtown shooting rampage almost three weeks ago.

School buses and cars will shuttle elementary students to nearby Chalk Hill Middle School in the nearby town of Monroe, Connecticut —now renamed "Sandy Hook Elementary"— where security has been ramped up for days.

"I think, right now, it has to be the safest school in America," said Monroe police Lt. Keith White.

Police said they are stopping every vehicle that goes onto the campus and interviewing the people inside. Several security devices have been installed and police will remain at the scene until further notice.

On Dec. 14, gunman Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary, forced his way into the Newtown school, and killed 20 children and six educators before taking his own life as authorities closed in.

During an open house at the new Sandy Hook on Wednesday, parent Vinny Alvarez thanked his daughter Cynthia's third grade teacher for protecting her class during the rampage. The teacher, Courtney Martin, locked her classroom door and had the children huddle in a corner of the room, The Associated Press reported.

"I'm not worried about her going back," Alvarez told the AP of his daughter. "The fear kind of kicks back in a little bit, but we're very excited for her and we got to see many, many kids today. The atmosphere was very cheerful."

Besides security, making the school comfortable and welcoming for students has also been a top priority for school officials. Janet Robinson, superintendent of schools in Newtown, said 80 people have been working to get the school ready for Thursday.

"Right now, Chalk Hill has been transformed from a middle school to a very cheerful, nurturing elementary school," Robinson said.

Furniture has been moved from the old building and the building will be decorated like a winter wonderland, filled with snowflakes people from around the world sent to the Connecticut PTSA to help make the students feel welcome.

"The students coming in completes the circle," Robinson said. "That's what's missing right now, is getting our students back."

Former principal Donna Page will lead the school and Robinson called this a "Godsend" to help the transition process.

Some of the set-up looks just like it did at Sandy Hook, but there will also be differences.

"Teachers were creative in setting up the rooms, and some of them are very different," Robinson said.

The school will also accommodate parents who want to go into the school Thursday, Robinson said.

Teachers and staff were at the school on Wednesday morning and were visited by Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy before the open house, the AP reported.

Several students and parents have already visited and the children were thrilled with the gymnasium, which is much larger than the one at their former school, White said.

Moonachie Sandy Victims: "Shame on Congress"

The delay in Congress means delays for the families who need Sandy aid most, including in Moonachie, N.J. where residents are drowning in despair and debt two months after the disaster. Pat Battle reports.

From New Jersey to the far reaches of New York City, residents of communities destroyed by Sandy expressed shock and dismay at the decision of Congressional leaders to delay a vote on Sandy relief.

"Congress is not paying attention," James Kane, who lost his home in the Breezy Point neighborhood of Queens in New York City, told NBC 4 New York. "We were devastated down here, as you can see."

A few blocks away, Marion O'Brien was coping with life without electricity and with a dangerous mold problem in her Breezy Point home that was once a place for play for her 17 grandchildren.

"They're sending money to different countries and they can't help us," said O'Brien. "That's terrible."

The lack of urgency on the part of Congress stood out for many residents hit hard by the storm.

"It's an emergency to almost everybody down here except for Congress," said Kane. "It was horrible. Horrible. Unreal."

In the tiny borough of Moonachie, N.J., population 2,900, the borough hall is still uninhabitable and will be for some time. The borough can't wait for FEMA and issued their own emergency bonds for $6 million.

"We're hoping that the government will stop dragging its feet and realize there's a real need here," said Mayor Dennis Vaccaro. "It's times like this I'm embarrassed to be part of government."

On Staten Island in New York, Shawn Johnson chased a Red Cross truck down the street so he could get free bags of groceries to feed his two kids. In order to make ends meet after Sandy, Johnson has worked two jobs, he said.

A certain degree of desperation has become the new normal for Staten Island residents wiped out by the storm and the signs are there for anyone to see, Johnson says.

"There a lot of people with signs outside their doors saying 'Help,'" Johnson said. "So that should be a sign where someone has to really open up their eyes to see what's going on. It's really ridiculous."

113th Congress Sworn in Thursday: Meet Your Leaders

advertisement

The 113th Congress will convene Thursday at noon for the first time to officially take the reins of government from its predecessors, who bear the distinction of being the least productive and popular Congress in modern American history.

Eighty-four new lawmakers will take their seats in the House and 12 in the Senate, though the party breakdown will remain mostly unchanged. Democrats will still control the Senate, 55 to 45, and Republicans will still have a majority in the House of Representatives, 233 to 200 (with two vacancies). But the incoming class of lawmakers is more diverse than any before it.

For more politics news visit NBCNews.com

It will include the first Hindu to serve in either the House or Senate (Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii), and the first Buddhist senator (Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii). But it's not quite that simple. Gabbard told The New York Times that while she identifies as a Hindu, "I am much more into spirituality than I am religious labels." Hirono told the paper that she is a "nonpracticing Buddhist" who "considers religion a personal matter."

The 113th Congress will also include the first openly bisexual congresswoman (Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.) who is also the first member of Congress to self-identify as religiously unaffiliated. Ten other members of the 113th Congress did not specify a specific religious affiliation, the Pew Forum points out, yet Sinema is the only to describer her religion as "none."

Congress will also swear in its first openly gay lawmaker of color (Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif.) four African Americans, 10 Latinos, five Asian Americans and two dozen women.

Women will now comprise 20 percent of the Senate and nearly 18 percent of the House.

New Hampshire will be the first state to send women, and only women, to Washington for representation. It already had two female Senators, Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen, but the 2012 election put women in the state's two House seats: Ann McLane Kuster and Carol Shea-Porter. (Another woman, Maggie Hassan, was elected governor.)

And there will also be a number of rising stars to watch out for:

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.): The Harvard law professor beat out incumbent Scott Brown in one of the most expensive races in history. (At least $68 million went into the fierce fight, according to The Associated Press.) The architect of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Warren portrayed herself as a champion for the middle class, consumers and women and jumped into the national spotlight with a prime speaking spot at the Democratic National Convention.

Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.): This Iraq war veteran, who lost both legs after her Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in Iraq, didn't win the first time she ran for Congress in 2006, but she beat out Tea Partier Joe Walsh in 2012 with 55 percent of the vote. Both made headlines when Walsh suggested that Duckworth boasted about her military past and therefore was not a "true hero." She told NBC Chicago that transportation is at the top of her priority list when as she heads to Washington.

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine): The former governor of Maine ran as an independent, but will caucus with Democrats. Still, he's said that he believes he can bridge the gap between the two parties—a tall task given the deep partisanship in Washington.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas): Tea Party darling Ted Cruz beat out former Democratic state Rep. Paul Sadler for the state's open Senate seat. He promised to work to limit the size and power of government and said he wants to build a wall that spans that Texas-Mexico border. He's the first Latino to represent his state in the upper chamber.

Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.): Sinema was homeless for a time, worked as a social worker and quickly rose through the ranks of state legislature before hitting the national stage, according to Fronteras. She grew up Mormon but later dropped any religious affiliation. She will push for limiting foreclosures, and creating jobs while in Washington.

Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.): Yoho worked as a large-animal veterinarian with little political experience before jumping into the ring and defeating incumbent Cliff Stearns. In explaining why he refused to sign Grover Norquist's anti-tax pledge, Yoho told NPR that he didn't want to handcuff his legislative options. "The only pledge that I made is I said I would serve eight years, and I'm going home," he said.

Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III (D-Mass.)
: Robert F. Kennedy's grandson is the latest Kennedy to be elected to Congress. He tied the knot last month and told the Boston Herald earlier this week that he's ready to take on gun control in the wake of Sandy Hook school shooting. "It's something I certainly feel strongly about." Both his grandfather and great-uncle, President Kennedy, were assassinated by gunmen.

Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah): Chris Stewart is a businessman and former Air Force pilot who has also written two New York Times bestsellers, "Seven Miracles That Saved America" and "The Miracle of Freedom." The Mormon father of six is pals with conservative pundit Glenn Beck and a proponent of American exceptionalism, according to the National Journal. A self-described "Second Amendment guy," Stewart told the Salt Lake Tribune that since the Newtown massacre he's open to limited gun control including the banning of high-capacity ammunition.

Rep. Joaquín Castro (D-Texas): Castro's twin brother, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, stole the spotlight as the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention. Now Joaquín Castro has landed on NBC Latino's list of 10 politicians to watch for in 2013. Castro is a graduate of Harvard Law School who focused on education during his five-term tenure in the Texas state legislature.

Bartenders Against Drunk Driving

Bartenders Against Drunk Driving will be wearing t-shirts to remind patrons to have a plan to get home safe after partying on New Year's Eve.

More Photos and Videos

A New Year's Eve program intended to keep you from getting behind the wheel is starting behind the bar.

Carol Wooden and her husband began a local chapter of Bartenders Against Drunk Driving in 2010 after setting up their JC Bartending Academy in Plano.

"We're OK with drinking," she said. "We're OK with having fun. It's just making sure that people are responsible and the afterthought of ensuring they have the safe ride home is not an afterthought."

This year, the Woodens have handed out T-shirts to bartenders at 20 bars and restaurants in North Dallas and Collin County. The New Year's Eve shirts have 1-800-TAXI-CAB printed on the back as a subtle reminder to patrons about how to get home safely.

"As the bartender turns around to make the drink, it might just trigger in their mind, 'Hey, I need to make sure I have a ride home," Wooden said.

BADD has also passed out hundreds of "safe cards" that also bear the number for the taxi conglomerate, a partnership between dispatches that sends out the closest taxicab so callers aren't kept waiting.

Plano police are also using an attention-grabbing technique this season.

The weekend before New Year's, the department rolled out a Choose Your Ride campaign, featuring a Plano police cruiser wrapped in taxicab yellow on its back half.

"We want to grab people's attention," Plano police spokesman Officer David Tilley. "Maybe [if] they've had a little too much to drink, they'll see this and it will be a reminder."

The Choose Your Ride car will likely be posted around The Shops at Legacy in Plano for New Year's Eve.

Garland firefighters are working around the clock to raise money for one of their own who was injured in a car crash that may have left him paralyzed for life.

Devon Colbert, 28, may not walk again after a car crashed into his vehicle on Dec. 17 in Rockwall. His 2-year-old son was also strapped into the car but was not hurt.

Emily Colbert watched her husband follow his lifelong passion to become a firefighter, only to have the unexpected setback thrown in their path.

"It breaks my heart," she said. "It breaks my heart, because I know how hard he worked to get where he is. I know how hard we've worked as a family to get where he is."

The Garland Fire Department has been working to raise money for her and their two young boys, covering shifts and making 24-hour visiting rounds at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation.

"If it wasn't for our faith, we would be on the ground," Emily Colbert said. "If it wasn't for our extended fire family and family coming and picking us up, I don't know how we would be making it."

"He would do the same for me in a heartbeat," said Ross Dyer, who filled in for Colbert on his New Year's Eve shift. "He would do the same for anybody in this department."

Devon Colbert has been working at the Garland Fire Station No. 7 for the past year, but it took him nearly seven years just to get a job in the department. Before, he was a volunteer with the Rockwall Fire Department.

"He is so thankful to have this job," firefighter Jerry Click said. "He gets here almost two hours early before his shift starts, and he's the last one to leave. He works nonstop."

Emily and Devon Colbert are holding onto their hope that one day he'll be back where he always wanted to be.

"He will walk again," Emily Colbert said. "I have to believe that; that's what I'm holding onto in my heart."

Oklahoma State and Purdue play in the inaugural Heart of Dallas Bowl on Tuesday. It will be the third consecutive New Year's Day game played in the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium since the namesake game moved to Cowboys Stadium.

The 2013 game features a new title sponsor, the Heart of Dallas, a new non-profit organization that works with Dallas charities.

"We're not only getting the chance to tell the city of Dallas about what we're doing here in the community but we get to tell the whole country and the world that Dallas has a heart," said Heart Dallas board member Kern Egan. "We're about our people and we're about giving back and that's what we're going to use this game for."

The proceeds from Tuesday's game will benefit charities working to end homelessness in Dallas including the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance.

"A lot of bowl games, don't get this opportunity to help others and it's a great thing that we're helping," said Oklahoma State lineman Lane Taylor.

Dallas Firefighter Hurt in Crash

A Dallas firefighter was hurt while responding to an accident on Northbound U.S. 75 New Year's Day morning. Crews tell NBC5 that firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Dallas Fire-Rescue said they had been called out to a crash on U.S. 75 and had parked the ladder truck in a blocking position for safety. A driver of a pickup truck smashed into the side of the fire truck.

One person from the original wreck also had to be taken to the hospital.

Police shutdown U.S. 75 northbound for several hours causing major traffic backup and frustrating many New Years Eve revelers trying to head home.

As crews had been working on the wrecks on U.S. 75, another 3-car crash happened on the frontage road at Forest Lane. Hazmat crews had to clean up some fuel spilled in that wreck.

One lane of traffic could get by the crash involving the fire truck, but drivers had to exit at Coit Road.

Fort Worth Gun Show Draws Big Crowds

NBC 5's Sara Story reports on one of the first gun shows in North Texas after the Tragedy in Sandy Hook. Fears over gun control regulation prompted many gun collectors to show up.

More Photos and Videos

Gun enthusiasts were met with long lines at the Will Rogers Memorial Center Saturday for The Original Fort Worth Gun Show.

"The attendance has just been over the top," said Tim Finucane, the show's owner.

Finucane said the gun show has been in his family for decades, but Saturday's crowd was a first. He said this crowd was driven by the uncertainty of gun laws in the wake of the school shooting in Sandy Hook, CT., that left 20 children and seven adults dead.

"The talk of restricting gun ownership, restricting ammo, restricting accessories, people are concerned," Finucane said. "They think they need to get out and buy it before the government takes it away."

President Barack Obama has formed a team that will look at gun control laws and possibly recommend new regulations.

Meanwhile, as the demand goes up, so do prices.

"Last year, I paid $345 for my .40 caliber hand gun. Now. I paid $557," said gun owner James Smith.

There were no protests visible to NBC 5 crews on Saturday.  However, a small crowd held a protest outside The Dulles Center in Virginia where "The Nations Gun Show" took place.

The Fort Worth gun show runs through the weekend -- and organizers expect as many people to show up on Sunday.

By the handfuls and piles, coats of all sizes poured into a Grapevine store to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. It was all part of Lewis Johnson's World-Class Coat Drive.

For seven-time NBC Olympic commentator, Lewis Johnson,  the man behind the drive his goal was to collect 500 coats.

"It's not just sitting back and watch things happen on the TV, but if you can actually help somebody out then we should take the opportunity to do so," Johnson said.

On the first day of collections, Johnson received more than 200 coats.

And the generosity of north Texans came through. With the help of athletes like Super Bowl champs Russell Maryland and Rickey Dudley, Olympians and volunteers packed more than 500 coats on Sunday.

"I knew that I was going to be doing some coat packing and unpacking today, I didn't realize it was going to be that many coats," Maryland said.

Collection boxes at seven drop off locations across the Metroplex were crucial in reaching the goal of 500 coats.

"This is a good couple of months later for to remember what happened there and for us not to forget and to just keep on giving," Pat Brolan, a donor said.

For donors like Cindy from Carrollton who first about the drive from NBC DFW, it's about helping those who nearly lost it all during the super storm.

"Everybody has a big heart; it just takes somebody to put it in motion," Ken Beam, a donor said.

All the donations will go to the New York Cares 24th Annual Coat Drive and Boys & Girls Clubs in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.

A 48-year-old Denton County woman is in a Dallas hospital after being shot by a family member overnight Saturday, according to the Denton County Sheriff's Dept.

Officers said someone called 911 from a home on the 1300-block of Oakcrest in Providence Village. The person hung up but deputies were dispatched to the address.

Deputies arrived at the house shortly after a second 911 call. They discovered the woman had been shot and a 50-year-old man, was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Paramedics flew the woman to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.  Her condition is not known.

A third adult woman was in the house at the time of the shooting, but she was not physically injured. The Dallas County Sheriff's Department said that woman is the couple's 23-year-old mentally disabled daughter. She is now with family members.

The Sheriff's office believed the daughter made the second phone call to 911.

Investigators believe the man shot himself after shooting the woman.

The shooting is under investigation, though police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the shootings.

Redskins Beat Cowboys 28-18 To Win NFC East

advertisement

After throwing three interceptions in his latest make-or-break defeat, Tony Romo shuffled across a silent locker room, grimacing and looking at the floor.  He dressed creakily. Merely putting on his dark socks appeared to be an ordeal.

Now comes a tougher task for the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback: processing his performance in a season-ending 28-18 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday night with the NFC East title on the line.

"I feel as though I let our team down," Romo said at his postgame news conference, his words deliberate, his stare blank. "Your legacy will be written when you're done playing the game," said Romo, whose three interceptions matched his total from the previous eight games combined.

"It's disappointing not being able to get over that hump," he added, "but I also know that football is the ultimate team sport and I need to continue to improve, and our football team does, to get there."
Needing a victory over the rival Redskins (10-6) to reach the playoffs, the Cowboys (8-8) finished at .500 for the second season in a row. They'll miss the postseason for the third consecutive year.
And this is the third time in the past five years that Dallas lost its regular-season finale when a win would have allowed it to keep playing.

"We have a big challenge ahead of us. (The Redskins) are, of course, in the tournament, and we have to sit at home and think about how to get in the tournament. This is very disappointing. We have players that have fought hard all year, but it did not end up the way we wanted," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "And one of my jobs is to evaluate and analyze and make decisions in the offseason that can help us be in better shape."

He can look at Washington to see how quickly things can change. Rookies Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris needed only four months to give the Redskins their first division title since 1999.
Griffin, the Heisman Trophy winner drafted second overall, ran for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Morris, the sixth-rounder from Florida Atlantic, ran for 200 yards and three TDs. He set the franchise single-season rushing record for the Redskins, who turned around the season behind their quarterback's talent and leadership to win seven straight games, becoming the first NFL team to make the playoffs after starting 3-6 since the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars.

After the final whistle, team captain Griffin walked off the field with a big smile, holding up his left index finger in a No. 1 gesture. Washington, which set a franchise record with only 14 turnovers this season (zero on Sunday), will host Seattle next Sunday.

Romo, meanwhile, was intercepted on each of Dallas' first two possessions. His last turnover was the one that bothered him the most: A poor throw was picked off by Rob Jackson when the Cowboys had a chance to drive for a winning score in the final minutes.  "That'll eat at me for weeks now," Romo said.

He almost became the first Dallas quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards in a season, but his career is instead further tainted by late-season disappointments. He also had Week 17 losses to the Philadelphia Eagles (44-6) in 2008 and the New York Giants (31-14) last year, along with a 1-3 record in playoff games (who can forget the botched hold?).

"There's been a couple of these games towards the end of the year that are critical games and we haven't gotten it done as a football team -- and Tony's certainly a part of that, but everybody's a part of that," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said.

On Sunday, Morris' 32-yard scamper gave the Redskins a 21-10 cushion with 10½ minutes left. Trying to play catch-up, Dallas pulled within three on a 10-yard TD pass to Kevin Ogletree and a 2-point conversion with 5:50 to play. But Morris' third touchdown, a 1-yard run with 1:09 left, sealed the outcome.

It didn't help matters for Dallas that receivers Dez Bryant (back) and Miles Austin (left ankle) got injured. Bryant, who Garrett said "really couldn't even walk," left after four catches for 71 yards.
"Missing those two guys is crucial," said Ogletree, who got a talking-to from Romo after the QB's first interception.

In the end, Dallas also was hurt by missing five injured starters on a defense that simply could not stop Morris. But what will be remembered mostly will be the play of Romo, who completed 20 of 31 passes for 218 yards, often facing pressure from what Garrett described as the way the Redskins "just kind of rolodexed those blitzes through."

"We know Romo doesn't like pressure in his face, so that was our big thing," Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said. "We had to get pressure up the middle. Not so much on the outside; keep him in the pocket. That's what we were able to do."

Notes: Cowboys KR-WR Dwayne Harris was on crutches after the game. Garrett said he had a lower leg injury. ... Dallas is 128-128 in regular-season games since the start of the 1997 season.

Obama, Clinton Most Admired Again: Poll

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are Americans' most admired man and woman, respectively, according to a new Gallup poll.

advertisement

Admiration abounds for President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The duo are Americans' most admired man and woman — again — in a Gallup poll.

This is the 11th straight year that Clinton has been the most admired woman, while Obama has topped the list of the most admired men five years in a row.

First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were next in line behind Clinton on the list of women.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, Obama's recent Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney, evangelist Billy Graham, former President George W. Bush and Pope Benedict XVI followed Obama on the list of men.

Clinton has topped the list of the most admired women more than any other woman in the history of Gallup's poll — 17 times going back to her first year as first lady in 1993. She finished second to Mother Teresa in 1995 and 1996 and second to Laura Bush in 2001.

President Dwight Eisenhower ranked the most admired man 12 times, a Gallup record for men, followed by former presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, with eight first-place finishes each.

The USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted from Dec. 19 to 22. The "most admired" question was open-ended, asking Americans to name, without prompting, the man and the woman they most admired living in any part of the world.

Gallup first asked Americans to name their most admired man in 1946 and added the ranking of women two years later.

The Frisco school district tax building is closed for the winter break -- but not for reasons most parents are used to hearing.

A note taped to the building tells parents: "Due to the recent events in Connecticut, the FISD administration is requiring us to keep this building locked during the winter break."

In a statement sent late Friday night, Frisco Independent School District spokesman Jamie Driskill said the district decided to keep the building locked during the winter break when the building was not fully occupied because of "security concerns heightened by recent events."

The note on the building tells parents they can drop their payment in a drop box and apologized for the inconvenience.

Driskill said payments are collected daily. Payments are noted as being paid that day, and receipts are then mailed, he said.

The building's note caught Sunil Malik by surprise. The parent was coming to pay his taxes and get a receipt. He said he didn't understand why the building, which is near a middle school but not connected to the classrooms, was closed.

"It says it's a security concern, but the shootings were related to the kids, and it's not a school," he said.

Rejesh Chauhan, another parent, drove up to the building to pay his taxes. He read the sign and thought the note perhaps was a show of compassion for the recent tragedy in Connecticut. But he said he wasn't too pleased about having to drop his check into a drop box.

"If they put this note, I wish they would send a little sweet letter at home telling the exact reason, right?" he said.

Driskill said the district agreed that the note on the building was confusing, saying that a better solution would be determined in the future and communicated better.

The office will be open during its regular hours next week Wednesday through Friday and until noon on Monday, he said.

Investigators are trying to find the person who torched several classic cars at a business in Forney on Christmas Day.

Gerald Gauthier, owner of the Mustang Shop, said a friend called on Christmas morning to tell him that several cars parked outside his lot were on fire.

"He said, 'Your business, it looks like a war zone,'" he said.

Gauthier arrived to find three classic Mustangs gutted and several more with smashed windows.

"The first thing he did is, he went to destroy glass on all the vehicles," he said.

The vandal was caught on surveillance cameras installed outside Gauthier's business.

In the video, the person can be seen walking up to the vehicles, smashing the windows and then lighting something on fire. Shortly afterward, several of the vehicles can be seen erupting into flames.

"They're gone; they're completely gone. The '69 is somewhat salvageable, but these two here, they're just plain gone," said Gauthier while pointing to two classic Mustangs that were scorched and gutted by flames.

Gauthier said it has taken years to build up his business. What happened will set him back thousands of dollars, he said.

"I think someone that does this wouldn't hesitate to do it again to someone else," he said.

Now he just wants the person caught before he strikes again.

"I think somebody doesn't have any Christmas spirit," he said. "I don't have any words for it. I couldn't really even explain it."

AA Merger Talks May Be at Critical Point

Pilots from both American Airlines and US Airways are taking part in four-party discussions with both companies.

APA On Standby for Merger

Leaders of the Allied Pilots Association are on standby, hoping they might be able to reach an agreement that could lead to a merger between American Airlines and US Airways.

More Photos and Videos

Leaders of the pilots union at Fort Worth based American Airlines have now approved a framework for a labor agreement if the airline merges with US Airways.

On the morning of Saturday, December 29, the Allied Pilots Association Board of Directors voted 11 to 5 to approve what's called a "memo of understanding."

The memo outlines temporary wages and work conditions if the two airlines merge. It also addresses seniority and other issues. Now American gets to look at it along with the pilots and the management at US Airways.

Unless all four parties agree to it, the Allied Pilots Association says a merger appears unlikely before American emerges from bankruptcy.  The pilots union cannot talk about specifics but said it wanted to have something done before AMR's Board of Directors meets a week from Wednesday.

Merger talks continue between the two airlines, and American Airlines is expected to emerge from bankruptcy in just months.

On Saturday, American Airlines released this statement:

"American Airlines remains actively engaged in discussions with US Airways, APA and USAPA to develop a framework for the terms of employment for pilots in the event of a merger.  The APA's proposal for this framework, approved this morning by its Board of Directors, is now subject to review and approval by American, US Airways and USAPA, which represents the US Airways pilots.  If agreed upon, a memorandum of understanding will assist our stakeholders, including the AMR Board, in making an informed decision as to whether a merger should be pursued.  This step comes as a result of American, in collaboration with the creditors committee, inviting the unions to take part in these discussions to better evaluate the costs of operational and pilot seniority integration.  We remain committed in our efforts to secure the best outcome for our financial stakeholders, our people and our customers."  Mike Trevino, AMR spokesman

The board of directors of American's parent company, AMR Corp., has scheduled a meeting Jan. 9 and could vote on a merger then, NBC 5 has learned.

People involved in the process stressed that many difficult details still must be ironed out before a merger vote can take place.

Company officials did not want to be quoted by name because of the sensitivity of the ongoing discussions.

The judge in charge of American's bankruptcy and the influential committee of creditors also would have to sign off on a deal.

American's three major unions -- representing pilots, flight attendants, and ground workers -- have already signed new labor agreements with the bankrupt airline. The talks now under way essentially involve new contracts with a merged company.

Combining workforces is full of potential pitfalls for each company. US Airways has not successfully combined labor groups since it merged with America West seven years ago. A merger with American could allow it to solve its current labor issues all at once -- or merely add to their complexity.

A merger would likely mean thousands of American employees would be pushed lower on the seniority list, but the value of a new deal could be a huge incentive. American pilots, for example, could add $100 million per year to their overall compensation, union insiders say.

It's unclear who would lead a combined airline. But analysts say a merger would likely push out American's top executive, Tom Horton, who has led the airline since it declared bankruptcy last November.

US Airways' executives have said if they win control, they would use American's brand name and keep its headquarters in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth Gun Show Draws Big Crowds

NBC 5's Sara Story reports on one of the first gun shows in North Texas after the Tragedy in Sandy Hook. Fears over gun control regulation prompted many gun collectors to show up.

Gun enthusiasts were met with long lines at the Will Rogers Memorial Center for The Original Fort Worth Gun Show.

"The attendance has just been over the top," The Original Fort Worth Gun Show owner Tim Finucane said.

Finucane said the gun show has been in his family for decades, but Saturday's crowd was a first. He said this crowd was driven by the uncertainty of gun laws in the wake of the school shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut that killed 20 children.

"The talk of restricting gun ownership, restricting ammo, restricting accessories, people are concerned," Finucane said. "They think they need to get out and buy it before the government takes it away."

President Obama has formed a team that will look at gun control laws and possibly recommend new regulations.

As the demand for guns increased, so has the prices.

"Last year, I paid $345 for my .40 caliber hand gun. Now. I paid $557," gun owner James Smith said.

There were no protests visible to NBC DFW crews on Saturday.  However, a small crowd held a protest outside The Dulles Center in Virginia where "The Nations Gun Show" took place.

The Fort Worth gun show closed Saturday night but will re-open Sunday morning at 10. The owners expect a full house.

Business was popping inside Party Warehouse on Camp Bowie Road in Fort Worth Saturday morning.  But party balloons aren't all that's being inflated there.

"We've had to raise prices," said owner Steve Steffgen.

Steffgen says his helium costs are up 300%.  He is charging his customers more on a dozen helium balloons.  From $6.99 to now $9.99.

Steffgen fills his customers in about the helium shortage which he said is a supply and demand issue.  Most of the demand comes from the medical industry.  An entrepreneur with three party stores is not on the priority list for helium.

"We've had to raise prices on helium tanks that we rent and we've even had to stop renting for a while," Steffgen said.

The shortage has forced Party Warehouse to become more creative, coming up with arrangements that use less helium or none at all.  Steffgen showed us "balloon columns" on display in his story.  They're decorative and festive and the balloons are filled with air, no helium.

Steffgen said people planning on picking up helium balloon arrangements for New Year's Eve not to do it too early in the day.  His and other stores are filling some balloons with 20% to 40% air to save helium, which means the balloons will deflate a few hours sooner.
