On this Black Friday, not everyone is at the mall shopping.

In Mesquite, hundreds of people are sure spending money for several big high school football games, including the Poteet High School and Dallas Lincoln game.

If there's two things North Texans love, it's football and family.

"Football is everything," said Poteet supporter Melissa Shields. "It promotes character in our boys and we wouldn't have it any other way."

The City of Mesquite is hosting several playoff games this season, and while some are spending money on the biggest shopping day of the year, others are leaving it in Mesquite.

Business owner James Donahoe says playoffs mean a payoff.

"It really boosts our business back at Cici's, we'll have huge turnover from all the athletes that will show up and the teams show up by the hundreds and it turns out to be a great profitable day for us," said Donahoe.

At Memorial Stadium, two matches kicked off Friday, including Poteet High School and Lincoln High School. The stadium has a seating capacity of more than 20,000 people.

For Poteet, making it to the playoffs is a big score, since they didn't make it last year and principal Karyn Cummings said in the 2008 and 2009 season, the team only won two games

"It's amazing what that does for the climate of the school and students do better in school, in their classes and they're behavior is better all the way around when there's a winning athletic program," said Cummings.

Dallas Lincoln is coming from a near perfect football season.

"It means everything," said Lincoln Supporter Ricky Williams. "It's a family tradition."

Win or lose, families and fans have undying support, while enjoying another fall Texas tradition.

Like so many shoppers this holiday season, Amanda Nutter is always looking for a deal -- even if it's dealing with the long lines and Black Friday chaos at the big-box stores.

After the morning madness Nutter visited GW Boutique, one of the high-end Goodwill stores.

"There were people killing each other the last cabbage patch kid or the Barbie doll and this is so much more calm," Nutter said.

Nineteen Goodwill stores across the Metroplex held their own Black Friday sale with all items at the stores available for 50-percent off.

"We're a retailer just like everybody else, we offer already great prices, but we thought that this could be another way to offer for better prices," Kristen Bostick, a Goodwill spokesperson said.

Stephanie Sisk, a cashier who's been busy behind the register, says customers appreciate the bargain.

"Half of them didn't even know about it," Sisk said.

The revenue generated will provide funding for job training and placement programs for people with disabilities or who are unemployed.

"It's just something that were just joining in on the Black Friday craze, it something else we can give back to the community," Bostick said.

This is Goodwill's second year to host the sale and the company has plans to do the same next year.

Early Bird Shoppers Claim Black Friday Deals

Those up early enough for the start of Black Friday sales -- some as early as Midnight -- say they snagged deals during their early morning shopping.

Black Friday Begins in DFW

At the same shopping center in North Dallas, Toys R Us shoppers start their Black Friday spending at 8pm on Thanksgiving while Best Buy customers must wait.

Who needs sleep when you can practically hear the sales calling from your nearby shopping mall?

That's the question tens of thousands of North Texas Black Friday shoppers are asking themselves, with the resounding answer of "Not me!"

"I mean, I ain't got nothing else to do.  I got four children and they said, 'Mom, it's the Black Friday.'  Mom is here!" said Tish Alexander of Fort Worth, who spent all night at the North East Mall in Hurst.

The North East Mall, like many other stores and shopping centers in the Metroplex, opened its doors at midnight.  And like a retail "Field of Dreams" --  if you open it, shoppers will come.

"The mall's not the first stop," said Gerald Jordan of Colleyville, his two kids in tow.  "[We] started with breakfast and it's progressively... we went from the mall to Kohl's to a lot of places."

Bargain hunting is the primary reason people told NBC 5 they came out in the middle of the night.

"Scarf, pants, sweater - everything, the entire outfit, for under $35!" one shopper exclaimed.  She, like so many others, has turned the overnight ritual into a holiday tradition -- zipping from store to store with friends and shopping bags in tow.

Over at the Galleria in Dallas, crowds were picking up Friday evening, looking even busier than Friday afternoon. Three of the parking garages were at capacity with the rest of the spaces at 95-percent capacity around 5 p.m.

The constant flow of people coming in and out are helping customers find places to park.

People took advantage of items discounted 60 to 70-percent off in some stores.  Many retailers are also offering gift cards for customers who spend a certain amount in their stores.

Customers that spoke with NBC 5 said they're pretty happy with the bargains.

"A lot of great deals," says shopper Sean Jones of Dallas.  "I'm probably spending a little less per item (than last year) but maybe spending near the same amount because I'm buying more."

Small business owners are hoping you don't forget the little guy this weekend.

After shoppers flock to the mall and large retail chains on Black Friday, many are hoping customers participate in "Small Business Saturday."

"In order to compete with the big boys," said Suzanne Roberts, who owns her own store, Suzanne Roberts Inc., in Snider Plaza in University Park.

Roberts said she can't offer the big discounts like major stores, but to lure customers into the store, she is offering something.

"Our special is nothing like theirs. At 20% off, that's a big special for us," Roberts said.

Vickie Brown, who owns Love Tennis, also in Snider Plaza, is doing the same thing.

"Right now, we are having a sale. We moved it up just about three weeks. We usually do it just before Christmas, but we thought for Small Business Saturday we were going to offer 75-percent off of past seasons of Stella McCartney and Adidas is 30-percent off," Brown said.

Both women said it's important for shoppers to remember small businesses in order to support the local economy.

They also point out customers won't have to deal with the hassle of long lines and crowded aisles.

"It's so intimate with the customer and we have our clientele base where we get to know the customers one-on-one. So it's not just a come in and shop. We really get to know you," Brown said.

Sundance Square has the Christmas Spirit.

On Friday, Sundance Square hosted the Fort Worth Parade of Lights. Thousands of people crowded the streets to get a look at more than 100 floats decorated with lights.

But the big draw was a big tree. Santa Claus came into town to help light up a 55-foot blue spruce tree from Michigan decorated with ornaments.

Based on reaction from kids in the crowd, the event was a hit.

"We get to see the tree light up, and we get to see, we get to see Santa!" said an excited Kaila Delane of Irving. "It's my first time, but I kind of like it. It's like New York."

Hundreds of people waited in line to pose for a picture with Santa and the tree. Pictures are $7 and benefit charity.

Mass. Gas Explosion Injures 18, Levels Strip Club

A natural gas explosion in one of New England's biggest cities on Friday destroyed a building, one housing a strip club, and damaged others beyond repair but didn't kill anyone, authorities said.

"This is a miracle on Worthington Street that no one was killed," Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said at a press conference.

Firefighters, police officers and gas company workers in the area because of an earlier gas leak were among more than a dozen injured people, authorities said.

The explosion in a downtown area of Springfield, 90 miles west of Boston, blew out all windows in a three-block radius, leaving three more buildings irreparably damaged and prompting emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling.

Police Sgt. John Delaney marveled at the destruction at the blast's epicenter, where a multistory building was leveled.

"It looks like there was a missile strike here," he said.

Officials at two nearby hospitals said a total of 18 victims were transported with injuries but none was critical.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 4:20 p.m. and were investigating the gas leak when the blast happened shortly after 5 p.m. The cause of the explosion hadn't been identified but was under investigation, they said.

Springfield, which has about 150,000 residents, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. It's known as the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is not in the vicinity of the blast.

The explosion, in an area of downtown Springfield with commercial properties and residences, destroyed a building that housed a Scores Gentlemen's Club.

Area resident Wayne Davis said he felt his apartment building shake a block away.

"I was laying down in bed, and I started feeling the building shaking and creaking," he said.

The Navy veteran said the boom from the explosion was louder than anything he'd ever heard, including the sound of a jet landing on an aircraft carrier.

The blast was so loud it was heard for miles around. Video from WWLP-TV showed the moment of the explosion, with smoke billowing into the air above the neighborhood.

Interstate 10 near Beaumont re-opened Thursday evening, hours after a massive crash involving as many as 100 vehicles left two people dead and up to 120 injured.

KPRC-TV in Houston reported two people from Pearland, near Houston were killed in the pile-up.  Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis said those victims were in an SUV, but declined to provide details.

The crash took place in extremely dense fog shortly before 9 a.m. along a two-mile stretch of road between Taylor's Bayou and Hampshire Road, NBC News reported.

Earlier reports suggested that between 50 and 150 vehicles may have been involved in the crash, but those estimates have been updated to 100.

Initially dozens of people were also reported injured, now that number has grown to as many as 120 with 51 of those injuries requiring hospitalization -- eight of the people are considered critical.

I-10 was closed in both directions west of Beaumont near Hampshire Road.  Shortly after noon, the westbound lanes reopened to traffic.  The eastbound lanes re-opened at 5 p.m.

On Thanksgiving morning in Frisco, the city's relatively new North Texas Turkey Trot tradition was bursting at its seams.

"This year, we're topping off at 4,000 [runners]," said Cacy Saffery, a board member of The Miracle League of Frisco.

The Miracle League is responsible for seven sports teams, supporting school-aged athletes with special needs.

Before the run last year, Saffery said he and other organizers were hoping for maybe 1,000 participants.

They ended up with about 1,800, never imagining they'd more than double that number the following holiday.

"We love our family and we wanted to do something fun," said runner Brandy Couchot, running with her cousin Lauren and much of the extended family, all dressed up as turkeys and other festive Thanksgiving characters.

The first run of the morning, however, focused on The Miracle League's athletes.

"We hope this will be a family anchor throughout our community," Saffery said.

"There's a void, and we want to fill that void. We want it to be the standard and not the exception."

The Miracle League of Frisco offers opportunities for kids to play basketball, soccer, baseball, bowling, track and more.

Skipping Thanksgiving Tradition For Sales

Many North Texans take the feast on the road as they wait for stores to open for Black Friday weekend.

More Photos and Videos

On Thanksgiving evening, it was the tale of two stores in North Dallas. A rush of shoppers entered Toys 'R Us at 8:00 p.m. The Central Expressway and Park Lane location was filled with shoppers. Meanwhile, nearby Best Buy customers waited for a midnight opening.

For the Toys 'R Us shoppers, it was all about saving money. Neisha Moore is the mother of a 3-year-old girl.

"I'm buying for her, her friends, family, people," Moore said. "I have a tree angel to shop for [too]."

It's also about saving money. "Oh, it saves a lot of money," said shopper Leslie Toledo. "Like a few 100 dollars."

The economy was also worth camping outside Best Buy for shoppers like Maria Pena.

"Just on the TV, you're saving more than half of it," Pena said. "So it's affordable right now even if you have to be out here two days to get it."

David Diamondson of Grand Prairie made sure to have his turkey, and his deal too.

"We've got a little cornbread, stuffing, potato salad and turkey," he showed us his meal. He also had a good reason to be waiting in line for 50-inch flat screen TV.

"I don't have one. I got an old fashioned TV and I want a flat screen," Diamondson said.

His relative brought food for the family, and she too, was waiting in line.

Mary Warren also had her reasons for camping out in front of Best Buy.

"We're here because our house was burglarized last week, took our 52-inch screen TV and my laptop and just about everything and made a mess and insurance won't really cover that much," Warren said.

Regardless of their reasoning, these folks decided to have their Black Friday deals, and their Thanksgiving dinner, too.

Will it become a tradition? Diamondson doesn't think so. He says once he has the flat screens, "I'll have everyone at my house next year."

Reward Increased in Alicia Moore Murder Investigation

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 22 November 2012 | 20.41

For McKinney business owner Mark Cobb, it was a personal connection to the family of Alicia Moore that prompted him to action.

"Alicia Moore's Aunt Jessica works for me," said Cobb, owner of Kids R Kids. "I just felt the need to help out and do something."

Earlier this month, 16-year-old Moore was reported missing, last seen getting off the school bus near her Greenville home.

Moore's body was later discovered in a trunk on the side of the highway in rural Van Zandt County. Police are still investigating, but are remaining tight lipped.

"It is frustrating, that it's been two or three weeks and we haven't heard anything," said Cobb.

Over the past few weeks, Cobb has led a fundraising campaign, starting both a reward fund for information in Moore's death and a relief fund to help the teen's family.

By Wednesday afternoon, thanks to Cobb's own contribution, money given by his Kids R Kids parents and staff, and donations by his former boss at Greenville Chrysler and another Plano businessman, the reward fund had grown to $25,000.

"[It's] is a lot of money and it might get that right person to come forward and say what they saw," he said.

Cobb added the relief fund contains about $4,000.

The group of business owners has also rallied support for two billboards bearing Moore's picture and a plea for information, which will go up after Thanksgiving.

One will sit on Highway 380 in McKinney and the other outside of Greenville.

Cobb says the cost of the billboard rental was also donated.

Those who would like to donate to either fund can contact the West McKinney Kids R Kids location to speak with Mark Cobb.

Balch Springs Man Beaten in His Home

advertisement

A Balch Springs man was severely beaten on Monday morning in his house.

Roberto Benevides said he heard the doorbell just before 6 a.m. and thought it was his son, who had just left for work. Instead, it was a man he didn't recognize, asking for someone named "Enrique."

"He was looking for an Enrique at this address and I said, 'I don't know any Enrique,'" he said.

But before the 63-year-old could close the door, the man pushed it open and rushed in -- along with two other men who were hiding out of sight.

"I tried to block my face, but he started hitting me, but then the other two came in, also hitting me in the face and the head," Benevides said.

The men knocked Benevides down, but not before breaking his nose and bruising five of his ribs. Benevides, a retired border patrol officer, said he tried to fight one of the men off until another man came over and threatened him.

"That's when I was trying to wrestle with the guy that was holding me down, when he told the other two, 'One of you help me. This viejo is trying to get up,'" Benevides said. "And that's when the guy
said, 'You try to get up and look at our face or what? You do that, and I'll pop you.'"

The threat convinced Benevides to stay on the floor.

The men took a 60-inch TV but never went upstairs, where Benevides' wife, son and two other family members were resting. Benevides said he is grateful that the men didn't decide to go upstairs.

"The material items, they can be replaced," he said. "But threatening my family or taking my son with them or my wife with them when they left -- there was no way I could stop them."

Balch Springs police released a composite sketch of the man who rang the doorbell. He's described as a young Hispanic man who is about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 to 160 pounds with light skin and light brown hair. Benevides said the man spoke Spanish.

Anyone who may have seen the men in the area are asked to call Balch Springs police and ask for Detective Bird at 972-557-6014.

Two Arrested for Killing Family’s Pet Turkey "Tom"

Must Follow Tips for a Safe Thanksgiving

Red Cross Instructor Wendelien Anderson spoke to NBC 7 about the disasters that can happen on Thanksgiving, how to prevent them and how to solve them if they happen.

Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Planner

Holiday travelers will face a bumpy ride as millions of Americans try to make it home for Thanksgiving.

More Photos and Videos

Two suspects have been arrested for killing a Florida family's pet turkey with an arrow days before Thanksgiving and carting him away for a holiday meal, authorities said.

Tom the Turkey's owners, Brian and Christa Caponi, of Gulf Breeze, were distraught over their pet's killing, but gathered enough clues that deputies swiftly arrested two suspects, according to a Santa Rosa sheriff's report.

The suspects, Joshua Warren Anderson, 19, and Jacob Hayden Provo, 18, were taken into custody Monday on charges that include burglary, trespassing, larceny and tormenting, depriving or mutilating an animal, the sheriff's report said.

Provo was the Caponi family's neighbor, the report said.

Tom was an eastern wild turkey whose estimated value was $300, NBC 6 South Florida reported. His killing caused Christa Caponi to become upset and start crying, the report said. "Christa told me that Tom was a very friendly pet who she loved," a sheriff's deputy wrote in his report. She said she also was scared that someone had entered her property, the report said.

The Caponi family had surveillance footage of two men entering their property about 10 p.m. Sunday, and one of the men taking away the turkey, the report said.

The Caponis told deputies that they also had seen Provo's white pickup parked near their home earlier in the week, even though "there would not have been a reason for him to be parked" there, the report said.

Deputies caught up with Provo, pulling him over in his pickup, the report said. When deputies asked Provo about the dead turkey in his vehicle, Provo said he had killed the turkey in Milton, a nearby city, the report said.

Provo later admitted to trespassing on the Caponi's property and killing Tom, the report said. Provo allegedly said that "he knew he should not have killed it and he should not have been there," the report said.

Riding in Provo's vehicle was Anderson, who "admitted to being with Provo while the turkey was killed and stolen," the report said.

Wireless Alerts to Reach More in DFW

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 21 November 2012 | 20.41

advertisement

AT&T Inc. now says it is ready to deliver emergency alerts to its smartphone subscribers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, months after an NBC 5 investigation revealed that the Dallas-based company was not ready to implement the new government-sponsored system in its hometown market.

"I am happy to report that, since your last report, we have completed our wireless emergency alert deployment in the Dallas area and are working aggressively to complete other areas as quickly as possible," AT&T spokeswoman Alejandra Arango said.

Besides the DFW metropolitan area, AT&T is currently ready to deliver emergency alerts in just three other major cities -- New York, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore.

The NBC 5 Investigates team started looking into the Wireless Emergency Alert System after seeing announcements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service this spring that claimed the system was ready to go nationwide.

The alert system is designed to send urgent weather warnings, Amber Alerts and presidential emergency alerts to smartphone users, using technology similar to text messages.

Under the original plan laid out by Congress, wireless carriers who agreed to take part in the program were supposed to have their end of the program up and running in April.

But this summer, NBC 5 Investigates found that AT&T was not able to deliver those alerts to its smartphone customers in the DFW area.

In June, AT&T told NBC 5 Investigates in a statement that: "We're not currently ready in Dallas, but we're working aggressively to get there."

FEMA, one of the agencies in charge of the system, told NBC 5 Investigates in June that it was ready to deliver on its part.

"The news release said that the FEMA portion of the system was established and running nationwide, and that's not a misstatement -- that's correct," Damon Penn, FEMA assistant administrator of national continuity programs, said in June. "Again, what part the carriers play and where the carriers are at in the process really depends on the carriers."

Wireless carriers Sprint Nextel Corp., Verizon Communications Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc. told NBC 5 Investigates that they were ready to deliver alerts nationwide this summer to any smartphone capable of receiving them

Rep. Joe Barton, who was involved in creating the alert system, told NBC 5 Investigates that wireless companies would work quickly to close any gaps in coverage because customers would demand it.

"That's what will ultimately drive 100 percent implementation, is someone will say, 'Verizon has it all,' or, 'Sprint has it all,'" he said.

Smartphone users with phones capable of receiving WEA alerts whose wireless company participates in the program do not need to sign up for the alerts. The system works automatically; phone will receive an alert if it's turned on and is located in any city where an alert is issued.

AT&T offers 11 smartphones that can receive WEA alerts. The iPhone currently is not one of them. However, Sprint and Verizon say they can deliver alerts to their iPhone subscribers.

Smartphone customers can check with their wireless carrier for more information about service area coverage and whether their phone is WEA-ready.

Birth Control Pills Without a Prescription?

A doctors group says women should be able to buy birth control over the counter and without a prescription.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that changing the way women get the pill could reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. Right now, about half of all U.S. pregnancies are unplanned.

If the recommendation is adopted, women could buy birth control pills alongside cough syrup and aspirin on pharmacy shelves.

In the past, some doctors have been resistant to the idea, citing concerns that women would skip their annual pap smear if they didn't need to refill a birth control prescription.

There are also concerns about some of the more serious side effects of birth control pills.

"I do think there needs to be a better option for people to get birth control, because people can't afford to go to the doctor and don't have time to go to doctor," said Dr. Linda Bernstein, a Fort Worth obstetrician-gynecologist.

"But there are certain people that definitely shouldn't be taking birth control pills, and those people we more need to worry about ... may not know they have a problem to start with," she said.

Women should not take the pill if they are pregnant or have certain conditions such as breast cancer or high blood pressure.

Government permission is still needed by any firm that would want to sell the pill without prescriptions.

Bernstein said she doesn't expect it to happen any time soon.

"I think that doctors, the government and drug companies need to do a lot more work before this is even possible," she said.

Museum Tower, Nasher Continue Feud Over Glare

Museum Tower officials say that a louver system similar to this one on a building in Germany is not a viable option.

advertisement

It appears that Museum Tower and the Nasher Sculpture Center are no closer to a solution for glare from the tower's glass.

The two are at odds over the sunlight that is reflected off the tower and into the sculpture center.

The Nasher has suggested that the tower install a louver system on the side of the 42-story building.

On Tuesday, Museum Tower released a study that says such a high-tech louver system is impractical and perhaps even dangerous. Tower officials said the louver slats would be too expensive to clean and maintain because they attract dirt and birds.

But Nasher leaders dismissed the study as a publicity stunt, and a meeting between the two sides set for Tuesday was canceled.

"The Nasher Sculpture Center remains committed to open communication in regard to a solution to the issues caused by the Museum Tower reflection," the Nasher said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "However, it became apparent that today's hastily called meeting was not about solutions and is evidence of a continuing pattern of not working in good faith toward a resolution."

The Nasher director is also calling on Dallas residents to contact city leaders about the problem.

Hostess to Liquidate After Failed Mediation

Okla. Man Stockpiles Hostess Snacks

A Stillwater, Okla., man who collects Hostess snacks was on a Twinkie mission after hearing news of the company's shutdown.

More Photos and Videos

The Twinkie has lost its lifeline.

Hostess' stab at mediation with its bakers union has failed, the company said Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was planning to move ahead with plans to shut down all its plants and liquidate its assets.

That plan, which the company had announced days earlier in bankruptcy court, comes on the heels of a strike by the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union and will leave more than 18,000 people out of work, a spokesman said Tuesday, according to the Journal.

A bankruptcy judge had asked the parties to head to mediation on Monday, but the president of the union had not been hopeful about its prospects and didn't attend the session. "I'm not too optimistic," he told the Journal on Tuesday.

Hostess will be back in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York on Wednesday to pursue its liquidation plan, after its earlier efforts to restructure while under Chapter 11 protection.

It declined to comment further Tuesday night, saying additional news would have to wait until its return to bankruptcy court at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Hostess snacks of all shapes and sizes have sold out of North Texas stores.

When people found out that Hostess might be going out of business, customers snapped up Twinkies, Donettes and other baked goods. Boxes of Twinkies even showed up on auction site eBay for hundreds of dollars.

"I think it's very, very sad -- a tragedy," Corrie Gould said. "We're really oging to miss the Hostess brand, for sure."

"I'll have to see what other brands are out there," Ty Gould said. "They're not as good as Hostess, I can tell you that."

That kind of brand loyalty is very valuable, and business insiders say the company could sell off certain brands to buyer.

But a Stillwater, Okla., man who is tracking down every Hostess treat he can says it may not be the same.

"The name will live on, but they won't be the same," Jefferson Bryant said. "They'll never be the same. You can't ship from Mexico and expect them to be fresh."

Driver Flees Fatal Grand Prairie Car Wreck

One person is dead and two people are in the hospital after a crash on state Highway 360 in Grand Prairie Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the wreck on the northbound lanes of 360 and Webb Lyn at about 3:10 a.m.

Drivers initially called police reporting debris in the roadway.

Authorities arrived to find an SUV off the road, upside down in a ditch. After searching the area, police discovered that two men were ejected from the vehicle.

Authorities believe the SUV had been speeding through a construction zone, lost control around a curve and hit cones, which caused the vehicle to flip over.

Officers say it appears the driver was the only person wearing a seatbelt. The driver, who lives in the area, walked away from the wreck toward his home, where officers were waiting for him. He was taken to the hospital.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, but another was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

Officers found an empty car seat and thoroughly searched the area, but don't believe a child had been thrown from the SUV at the time of the crash.

After the driver recovers from his injuries, he will need to answer to police for why he fled the crash.

The Texas Department of Safety has issued an Amber Alert for a missing 11-year-old girl from the Houston area.

Investigators say 11-year-old Savannah Hurley was abducted by her mother, Shelly Jean Hurley.

The Trinity County Sheriff's Office said Shelly Jean Hurley took the girl from a Child Protective Services worker. Authorities said Hurley, a known drug user, had a violent confrontation with the CPS worker.

An Amber Alert in the Woodlands area was canceled earlier Monday, but the Trinity County Sheriff's Office said it had requested the alert be reissued for North Texas because the mother and daughter may be on their way to the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

An Amber Alert for the DFW area had not been issued as of 10 p.m. Monday.

DPS later issued a statewide Amber Alert for Savannah Hurley at about 10:25 p.m., but the alert did not mention North Texas.

Savannah Hurley is 11 years old. She is white, is about 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds.

Authorities initially said the girl may be traveling with her mother in a 2006 Ford F-150 with Texas license plate number 58NZM4.

Melissa Russell, East Texas Amber Alert Plan coordinator, received information from the Trinity County Sheriff's Office stating that Shelly Jean Hurley switched vehicles at her mother's home in Garland. The Ford was reportedly found in Garland just before midnight at the home of Shelly Jean Hurley's mother.

DPS is now searching for a maroon 1996 Subaru Legacy station wagon with Alabama license plate number 48738AZ.

Shelly Jean Hurley also has a daughter living in North Texas. The search for the pair is now focused on the Garland/Dallas area.

If you have any information, please contact the Trinity County Sheriff's Office at 936-642-1424.

4 Calif. Men Charged in Alleged Terror Plot

The suspects were plotting to kill Americans living overseas and in the U.S.

Four men from California face charges for their roles in an alleged terrorist plot, according to an FBI statement released Monday.

The suspects, named in the U.S. District Court's criminal complaint as Sohiel Omar Kabir, Ralph Deleon, Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales and Arifeen David Gojali, were plotting to kill Americans living overseas and in the U.S. by joining al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to federal authorities.

All four men are from metropolitan southern California, and they told an informant that they planned to engage in "violent jihad," referring to armed combat against Americans abroad, the FBI statement read.

The complaint describes their plans over about a two year period, beginning in 2010, when Kabir introduced Deleon and Santana to extremist essays and lectures by Anwar Al-Awlaqi, a now deceased al-Qaida operative.

According to the Associated Press, Kabir is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Afghanistan and served in the U.S. Air Force from 2000 to 2001.

In 2012, Deleon and Santana recruited Gojali, who took part in much of the planning of an attack targeting U.S. military personnel and bases, according to the complaint.

Much of the information was gathered by an informant working for the FBI, according to the statement.

The three suspects kept in contact, and made plans to travel to Afghanistan to attend terrorist training. In preparation for the training, they practiced at various firearms and paintball facilities around southern California.

Deleon, Santana and Gojali were all apprehended Friday by the Joint Terrorism Task Force. They appeared before a U.S. District Court judge in Riverside Monday. Kabir was taken into custody in Afghanistan. If convicted, the men face up to 15 years in prison.

Ingenuity Deterring Third-Row Seat Thefts

advertisement

It can take less than a minute for thieves to pop the hatch of a sport utility vehicle and grab the third-row seats. Now business owners and law enforcement agencies believe they have come up with a solution to help prevent crooks from stealing the seats from SUVs.

Carrollton brothers Matt and Brian Verhalen, owners of The Seat Shop, have been working on way to protect third-row seats from theft. After a year and a half, they now have a patent-pending lock that they say will stop thieves.

"We worked so hard trying to come up with all these different designs and we finally had a design that works to where the seats are 100 percent functional," Matt Verhalen said. "It just disables the handle."

The $125 lock secures the seats in place, while making it easy for consumers to take it on and off.

"It won't let it release from the floor at all," explained Brian Verhalen, the younger brother. "You can still stow and go, so if you need to put up the groceries you can still flip the seat forward and you have the extra room for storage."

Niche Market

The Verhalen's know a lot about third-row seats since they've learned over the years how to build them from scratch. While the main focus of their business today is factory match leather seats, they started their business as a side job in 2006 in Matt's Frisco garage, originally rebuilding and refurbishing third-row seats they found in junk yards.

"As the economy kind of slowed and families were growing and they needed an extra row of seating, instead of buying a vehicle that had a third-row seat, they found they can actually just add a third-row seat to their existing vehicle," said Matt. "And that's kind of where we saw the niche. And we were going, 'Wow there's a big market for this.'"

The war in Iraq brought more opportunity. A bullet-proofing company, which won a government contract to send SUV's overseas and had no need for the third-row seats, sold them to the brothers.

"Eighteen-wheelers started backing up to our shop and we had pallets of third-row seats. So gone were the days of crawling the junkyards in the heat in the summer," Matt said.

But Matt said they're constantly getting calls from residents, and even dealerships, who have had seats stolen.

"We had a dealership calling us, like, 'We got 10 sets of third-row seats stolen off of our lot," he said. "It's the biggest crime-theft ring, whatever is going on, in Dallas that we've seen in the history of the company."

Plano resident Pat Sayers learned about The Seat Shop after the third-row seats were stolen from her GMC Yukon over the summer. She said her son had borrowed the SUV to sleep at a friend's house in Dallas near the intersection of Inwood Road and Royal Lane. When he got home and they were preparing to take him to college, they noticed the back glass of the hatch didn't seem to close right. They both looked inside, and the seats were gone.

"I thought he had taken them out and he thought I had taken them out. They were nowhere to be found," Sayers said.

And likely, they were long gone.

Thieves Target GM Vehicles

Highland Park, University Park and Dallas have seen a spike in these thefts. According to police reports, General Motors vehicles like the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon are typical targets. Not only are consumers victims of third-row seat thefts, but according to police reports, the Sewell Buick GMC of Dallas on Lemmon Avenue was also hit.

Victims like Sayers said even if the seats are found by police, there's no identification, making it difficult to return to the rightful owner. And dealers cannot help if the seats are stolen.

"I called them and I said, 'I need to order a third-row seat.' And they said, 'We don't sell those.' The manufacturers don't sell those. They only sell parts for seats," Sayers said. "That's very frustrating."

Another problem when the back window is popped open, the alarm doesn't sound.

"The glass doesn't have any kind of alarm on it," Sayers said.

NBC 5 Investigates asked General Motors about the problem.

"GM is aware of the situation with an increase in thefts of third-row seats in some large utility vehicles in certain areas of the country," said Mike Meyerand, GM Communications Manager. "We don't have any plans to change designs at this time."

"The bigger the house, the bigger the vehicle"

Highland Park Department Public Safety spokesman, Lance Koppa, told NBC 5 that two suspects were caught in the act of stealing the seats in late August.

"One of the officers drove up on an in progress offense and caught the suspects and probably connected them to about 100 offenses," he said.

Those suspects detailed to police why they targeted the Park Cities and surrounding areas. In an arrest affidavit one suspect said, "The bigger the house, the bigger the vehicle," and goes on to say that they sell the seats to a third party.

"There's a market for it and whether its people that don't have a third-row seat or if it's unfortunately our victims whose third-row seats have been taken and they're just trying to replace their stolen merchandise -- which is in some cases what has happened," said Koppa.

Back Window Alarm

Highland Park police are testing another solution, using a separate vibration motion alarm for the back window of the vehicle. They cost less than $20 and are meant to deter would-be thieves with a loud alarm when the window is popped open.

"This alarm we've been trying out for a few weeks and we have not had any falses. We have had good success with it and we are going to distribute those alarm devices though out the town," Koppa said.

The goal is to create an audible deterrent and to alert residents to call 911.

Sayers said she wasn't taking any chances after spending $1,100 to replace her seats. She bought the third-row seat lock as well. It even came with a sticker for the back window to warn would-be thieves that her third-row seats are not for the taking.

NBC 5's Karin Matz contributed to this report.

Fake Parking Attendant Dupes Dallas Drivers

advertisement

A North Texas woman duped by a fake parking attendant ended up paying more than $100 for a parking spot.

G'Nai Blakemore's car got booted at Canton and Browder streets near Dallas City Hall last week. Blakemore was going to a book tour event at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters and parked a few hundred yards from the location.

"I walk up to a guy who's standing there, and there's another girl who just pulled in as well," she said. "She's paying and we say, 'How much is it?' And he says, '$5 cash.'"

Blakemore said the man was holding a money pouch and wore a reflective vest just like other parking attendants. She said she didn't think twice about paying the man.

But a few hours later, she changed her mind after seeing a boot on her car.

"And I get to my car and I see a bright reflective orange thing," Blakemore said.

She called Hawkeye, the company listed on the parking lot sign as being in charge of parking enforcement. She told the man that she paid an attendant the $5 fee and even put the ticket on her dashboard, proving she paid. The ticket said "Parking Company of America," which is the lot owner's name.

"You have to have an attendant, because I paid him," Blakemore said she told the man on the phone. "And he's like, 'Nope, we don't have an attendant. And, you know, this happens all the time, but we don't have an attendant.'"

Blakemore had to pay $100 to get the boot removed, along with a $5 processing fee.

The parking lot does not have an attendant, but has a machine where drivers get their parking receipts.

NBC 5 contacted the Parking Company of America, but the company did not return a message.

NBC 5 also contacted Hawkeye Parking Enforcement. A man who said he was the acting manager on duty said he would have someone else call NBC 5 back, but the company didn't return the call.

NBC 5 did a similar story on drivers getting the boot at the same parking lot back in 2009.

Blakemore said she has learned her lesson and will look for parking elsewhere.

"If there is any opportunity to park somewhere else downtown -- even if I have to pay more to park there -- I won't deal with a company that knows something like this is going on and has nothing in place to help the customer," she said.

Getting into historic downtown Grapevine just got a lot easier.

After nearly three years of dodging orange barrels along the DFW Connector Project, all eight lanes of the Main Street bridge spanning State Highway 114 finally opened a half an hour ahead of schedule at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

All 8 lanes are now in use, including two northbound lanes, two southbound lanes, two left turn lanes, and two U-turn lanes.

"It's pretty huge, because we've been seeing this road closed for quite a while and now, to have that full access, it's going to allow people to be able to get to downtown Grapevine," said Perry Leonard of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce.

Local businesses, many of them hit hard by the massive DFW Connector project, are cheering the fully opened bridge.

"We need it, and we've needed it for a long time," said Merry Hodgkiss, the owner of Merry's Christmas and Clowns on Main Street Grapevine. "It's really been a slam on business."

Crews worked nonstop over the last two months finish the bridge in time for Thanksgiving and the holiday shopping season.

"The heart and soul of Grapevine is Main Street and to have that bridge open and to have the full capacity into the historic district and into historic Main Street is just so important to us," City Manager Bruno Rumbelow said.

The entire $1.02 billion DFW Connector project is a year ahead of schedule and is now on target to be finished by mid-summer of 2013.

Downtown Dallas is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The downtown Christmas tree lights were turned on, and Santa made a special appearance at a holiday event on Saturday night.

"It is like this big symbol. It is the point when Christmas time begins," Dallas visitor Ed Link said.

The Dallas tradition has been around for more that ten years, and it has captured the attention of people from across the globe.

"We are all coming from Massachusetts for the weekend," Link said.

One special guest traveled all the way from the North Pole. From typical Christmas characters like Santa to the unusual ones dressed up like storm troopers, holiday cheer was in full swing.

"Downtown is the heart of the city, so it is very important to make sure the holidays really start in the heart of the city,"  Kourtny Garrett with Downtown Dallas Inc. said.  "It gives everyone in Dallas a place to go and a place to have fun and celebrate Downtown."

Saturday's celebration was made complete with pleasant weather.

"I'm loving it. I want to come back to Texas. I love this weather. I'm not used to it. It's almost December," Dallas visitor Alinne Deoliveira said.

It was a festive night that kicked off the holidays and brought people together.

"I'm loving it. It's uplifting," Deoliveira said.  "It brings out the Christmas spirit, and it makes me want to shop."

Other tree lightings:

November 23 - 7:50 pm - Fort Worth

December 1 - 6:00 pm - Arlington

Police in Irving said a man is dead after shooting his wife Saturday morning.

Investigators are working to determine if he shot himself. Before his death, Irving SWAT officers spent hours negotiating with the suspect inside his home along Grimes Road.

Irving Police responded to a 911 call just after noon on Friday. They said a woman was shot by her husband and was found in their front yard before being transported to a local hospital.

Officials said she is in good condition Saturday evening. They said the suspect was still in the home when they arrived and another man was inside the house with him.

The SWAT team set up a perimeter around the house because they were unable to establish contact with the suspect. Several hours later, the man that was inside the home with the suspect came out. SWAT officers sent a robot inside the home which found the suspect dead.

They said he died from a gunshot wound and it may have been self-inflicted.

The names of the suspect and woman who was shot have not been released.

The 88-year-old Thomas Building in downtown Dallas was imploded Sunday morning.

Demolition teams imploded the vacant Thomas Building on Wood Street. This is the view from Young Street.

There was not a lot of sentimentality on display in a parking lot about 100 yards from the Thomas Building in Downtown Dallas.  We did coax this out of Debbie Mabry of Bristol.

"A little sad to see another old building going down," said Mabry, who grew up in Dallas.

But the real reason she and her husband drove in from Bristol was to see something cool.

"We said 'let's jump in the car and come up here and see what it feels like to feel an implosion, our first one," said Brian Mabry.  "We've been together 35 years and this is our first implosion together."

While people flocked to see the Thomas Building come down, we wondered if anyone knew anything about it.

"We don't know much of anything (about it's history)," said  Jeff Jerome.

Friend Meagen Anderson added, "I would assume it's somewhat old and historical."

The building started as offices for people in the cotton business in the 1920s across from the old Cotton Exchange which left us a few years ago much the same way the Thomas Building did at 10 o'clock Sunday morning.

Eight-year-old Dakota Price couldn't hide his excitement.

"Ohhhh yeaaaah," he said before I could even ask him a question.  "It just fell straight down," said Price.  "I heard a couple of booms then didn't see anything, then it just fell straight down!"

It took about 12 seconds, just like the folks at Dallas Demolition said it would.

A parking lot will replace the old building, at least for now.

That did not excite Brian and Debbie Mabry, the Bristol couple.

"Ohhh," said Brian.  "That's no good," said Debbie at the same time.

"Like the song, like the song," said Brian.  "Paving paradise for a parking lot."

There are new concerns on the Katy Trail after a young woman was assaulted Sunday morning.

Anna Chrysikopoulos runs the trail a few times a week. She's training for a half marathon.

On Sunday morning, she ran down the trail, off and into neighborhoods.

As she hopped back on the trail, she says a man grabbed her from behind.

She said, the man "wrapped one of his arms, like he's trying to grab my hip and pull me backwards, and then he didn't really get a good grip and I was screaming, and he ran off."

A fellow runner stopped to make sure she was fine, still Chrysikopoulos was shaken up.

"I think he was trying to grab me, take me," she said.

She describes the man as, "wearing long sleeve blue button down collared shirt with pin stripes, and... dark blue jeans."

She said it looked like the man had been out the night before.

"I couldnt breathe after it happened, I got really short of breath, I just wanted to take off and start running home."

Friends of the Katy Trail, the group which maintains the trail believes this to be an isolated incident and does have patrols during the weekends on the trail.

The Dallas Police Department is investigating the incident. There are no arrests.

Dozens of Dallas families are looking forward to a better Thanksgiving. A Dallas church made it possible at a very emotional event.

The day at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church started with people bringing groceries inside.

Turkeys, stuffing, rolls and other items were placed into bags by parishioners.  Church members adopted 100 families from nearby Medrano Elementary School to fill gift bags full of food.

Parishioners also got something out of it.

"Just to give back.. help out people, times are hard for everyone," said church member Martha Bellomy, as she wiped away tears.  She remembers when her family was in need of help.

"During these times, our church was very gracious and helped us, so this brings back a lot of memories," Bellomy said.

Families who received the meals were just as grateful and emotional.

"It's (pausing for tears) awesome," parent Alma Baltazar said. "Because my husband and I have been going through a rough situation. [He] got laid off and this [is] really helping us out to pay the bills and enjoy Thanksgiving."

Database Takes Aim at iPhone Black Market

advertisement

iPhone, iPad Thefts in NYC Soar 40 Pct.

As Apple shatters sales records, Apple thieves are driving up the crime rate. Thefts targeting iPhones and iPads are up a whopping 40 percent in the city. Andrew Siff reports.

Cops on Alert for "Apple Picking"

To combat thefts of the new iPhone, authorities say they've already begun ramping up their patrols. Kim Vatis reports.

More Photos and Videos

Cell phone thieves accustomed to turning big profits on stolen devices may soon find themselves out of business as a new national system comes on line to render any phone reported stolen permanently inoperable.

That may be small comfort to anyone with a missing phone now. But authorities expect the new system—a shared database of stolen phones—will vastly cut down on cell phone crime, which by one estimate makes up at least a third of all robberies.

The database "could probably kill this black market pretty quick," said Kenneth Angarone, a Chicago police commander who until recently ran a downtown precinct where much of the city's smartphone crime occurs. "You take away the black market and you take away the issue."

The first phase of what advocates hope will grow into a nationwide effort to track pilfered devices, involves AT&T and T-Mobile. On Oct. 31 the two carriers, which operate on the GSM network, began sharing records on all devices reported lost or stolen to prevent them from being reactivated.

Verizon and Sprint, which operate on the CDMA network and maintain their own individual blacklists, will merge their data into a more comprehensive database by November 2013. That will give the country's four major carriers access to a nearly complete roster of phones reported stolen in the United States.

It's a big change, and one authorities welcome.

Until recently, most phones operating on GSM technology have been tracked by their SIM cards, which can easily be tossed. The new joint database will track the handsets themselves, through a unique identification number, akin to a car's VIN.

"What the database does is to try to make the hardware a useless two-ounce piece of plastic and metal," said Chris Guttman-McCabe, vice president of regulatory affairs for the CTIA, an industry trade group.

Thirty to 40 percent of all robberies in major cities involve cell phone heists, according to FCC data released last spring, with iPhone crime topping the charts. Asurion, the insurance giant that provides coverage for Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile wireless customers, saw a 140 percent spike in smartphone claims between 2009 and 2011, with iPhones representing more than half of all lost or stolen phones last year.

One police chief's quest

These sorts of statistics prompted Cathy Lanier, chief of police in Washington D.C., to spearhead a nationwide initiative to weaken the black market that's been fueling the crime wave.

Her efforts began in May 2011 when her morning review of crime reports showed a dramatic spike in stolen iPhones in her city.

"I kept reading over and over, not just about robberies, but robberies in all different areas of the city in which they were specifically asking victims for their phones" Lanier said. There were snatch-and-grab crimes, armed holdups and even cases of masked gunman storming retail shops, bypassing the cash registers and demanding boxes of iPhones.

Alarmed, she sent an email blast to police commanders in other cities asking if anyone else was having the same problem. Immediately, the responses poured in.

"This is a nationwide problem here," she remembers thinking.

As Lanier and her staff continued researching the issue, they noticed that authorities in the United Kingdom had thwarted a similar problem by developing a national blacklist that prevented the thieves from activating phones that had been reported stolen. She wondered why there was no such database in America and began mustering police executives to lobby telecommunications carriers to create one.

The carriers had to be on board, she believed, for the crime wave to end. The stolen-car epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s, Lanier pointed out, only ended when carmakers began including technology that made new cars "nearly impossible" to heist.

The response from the phone companies, however, was disappointing.

"They entertained us a little, but I didn't think they were really getting our sense of urgency, to put it lightly," Lanier said.

She took her case to local news publications and the FCC, and was eventually invited on the "Today" show in March, where she blasted the wireless companies for putting profits over the safety of their customers. "Shame on you," she said on the show. "This is something that's fixable. It's not all about profit."

Just a month later, nearly a year after Lanier's initial requests, the telecommunications companies finally agreed to phase in a centralized database.

Leading up to the launch, smartphone crime in her city and others remained a problem. In September, the NYPD announced a 40 percent jump in the theft of Apple products, year over year, and a joint effort with the city's Metro Transit Authority to hide decoy cops on subway trains where muggings frequently occur. The same month in Las Vegas, police announced that they had busted two snatch-and-grab cell phone rings that "were making a living" off their crimes, according to spokesman Sgt. Bill Cassell. And in Chicago the release of the iPhone 5 was met with beefed up security to prevent "apple-picking."

Apple serves as a leader

Throughout the crime wave, Apple's "Find My iPhone" application has been one of the most successful tools for tracking down phones once they've gone missing, and one that cell carriers are urging their customers to use. Apple has trained some police departments, like the Chicago police department, in using the tool, which can pinpoint the location of a stolen device using GPS technology.

Det. Sgt. Daniel Herrington from Florida's Port St. Lucie Police Department recalls recently using the app to track a stolen phone that went missing at a high school volleyball game the night before.

Herrington and his partner, using login information provided by the victim's father, activated the tool and were given an address.

"We drove right to the kid's house and knocked on his door," Herrington said. "He answered and said, 'is this about the iPhone?"

While the app has been a godsend to the millions of Apple customers who lose their phones each year, it's still a reactive tool and not one that attacks the source of the crime problem the way the database might—particularly once it expands in 2013 to include devices operating on the LTE network, which is used beyond the United States.

Commander John Graeber of the Chicago Police Department's transit division expressed optimism about the blacklist shortly before AT&T and T-Mobile synched their databases. "The word is going to get out there really quick when that guy I sold to wants to get it re-upped and it's dead weight," he said. "I'm very anxious to see this go into place."

Still, security experts warn that more sophisticated thieves, including members of organized crime rings, will figure out ways around the database—how to mask stolen phones' electronic fingerprint, for example.

"It's not a silver bullet," said Dana Adams, a telecommunications security consultant based in Canada. The database "is a tool to focus on petty crime and hopefully it will grow into a national database." But some crime, Adams said, will persist. "There's too much money in it."

Air Quality Tested After Massive Garland Fire

Firefighters battled a large fire at chemical and plastics distribution facility in Garland on Friday.

The fire raged through containers inside a covered loading rack at the Nexeo Solutions facility in the 3000 block of Wood Lane on Friday afternoon. The fire was out by Friday night, and fire crews remained at the plant to monitor hot spots throughout the night.

The fire contained mostly methanol, a highly flammable liquid used to produce materials such as plastics, paints and fuels for cars. It can be poisonous if ingested.

A high-powered solvent, toluene, was also in the fire. It can be found in many items, including nail polish and glue, but can be dangerous to your health at high levels.

Nexeo Solutions spokeswoman Christina Reynolds told NBC 5 that all employees escaped the fire without injury. She said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The Environmental Protection Agency is checking air quality in the area. Garland fire crews said the initial EPA tests came back negative for any immediate danger. The first test results show normal to low levels of methanol in the area around the plant.

The agency tested the air from Garland to Dallas throughout the night.

The Garland Health Department is also tested the water and determined there was no threat to the public.

The fire, which was first reported at about 3:30 p.m., was contained to the loading rack, although adjacent containers emitted steam, presumably from heating or blistering paint.

Several explosions could be heard while the fire burned through containers.

"I though the whole plant exploded," witness Adam Lagerberg said. "I never seen anything this bad. It was bad."

Rusty Webb, who works nearby, was fewer than 200 yards away when the fire erupted.

"I was working there and heard the explosion," he said. "Actually, you could feel it in your chest. As soon as it did that, I grabbed the cellphone and called 911."

Chopper 5 was the first helicopter over the fire with aerial pictures. Chopper 5 photojournalist Ames Meyer and a pilot were hovering above the fire when she felt an explosion.

"We were 1,000 feet in the air, and when we felt a boom that big, it was just like a muffled sound," Myers said. "We both looked at each other like, 'What was that?' You know, your first reaction is, do you think it's the helicopter? No, it's that big fire on the ground."

At 4:40 p.m., firefighters began spraying water to try to cool tanks near the fire. Garland Fire Capt. Merrill Balancier said there is concern about spraying water onto the containers that are on fire because it is believed the chemicals do not mix well with water. But firefighters later called for sand trucks to be brought in because the use of water was spreading the fire.

Firefighters allowed the fire to burn out and kept it from spreading. To the west, tanker cars on rail lines contained chemicals that posed a significant risk of exploding, Balancier said.

Nearby businesses within one-quarter of a mile of the facility were evacuated as a precaution. The evacuation was lifted by Saturday morning.

Residential neighborhoods are as close as a half-mile to the east across South Shiloh Road, but were not evacuated, Garland Fire Chief Todd Peele said. However, officials asked people to avoid the area while the fire was burning.

The National Weather Service said the plume of smoke blew from east to west and rose to 7,000 feet. NBC 5 Chief Meteorologist David Finfrock said wind speeds were about 5 mph during the fire.

A Nexeo driver told NBC 5 he was thankful that the wind was blowing to the west. If it were blowing to the east, the tanks adjacent to the fire would be at much greater risk of exploding, he said.

A sign in front of the complex indicates that the facility is owned by Ashland, a world-wide chemical company. NBC 5 has learned that Ashland sold the facility in 2011 to Nexeo Solutions, a Texas company based in the Houston area.

According to the United States Department of Labor, Nexeo Solutions has been cited $11,500 for improperly storing flammable liquids and organic peroxides in December 2011 at a facility in Tewksbury, Mass. NBC 5 has also learned a Nexeo Solutions facility in Willow Springs, Ill., caught fire in June.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality says Nexeo currently has a satisfactory rating and has had no violations this year.

In 2011, the company received several notices of violations: three minor violations for training and inspections and a moderate notice of a violation for discharging hazardous waste into a water supply.

The notices do not mean a violation has occurred.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said the Nexeo facility in Garland has not had any issues.

NBC 5's Kevin Cokely, Kristi Nelson, Ames Meyer, Tammy Mutasa, Ellen Goldberg, Scott Friedman, Eva Parks, Ken Kalthoff, Omar Villafranca, Amanda Guerra and Mark Schnyder contributed to this report.

It was back to normal for businesses around the Nexeo Solutions plant Saturday morning.

Malcolm Graham of Garland Roofing, which has an office across the street from the plant was getting crews off to work.

Friday afternoon though, Graham was coming back from Flower Mound but his boss told him not to come back to the office.  He couldn't get there.  Graham said he saw the smoke from miles away but didn't realize where it was coming from at first.

Firefighters battled a large fire at the chemical and plastics distribution facility.  No one was injured. The Environmental Protection Agency and Garland Health Department tested the air and water in Dallas County and found there was no threat to the public.

Firefighters told the folks at the Garland Roofing office to leave right away and they did.

"They set the alarm on the front door but they didn't even lock it but they (firefighters) told them everything would be fine."  Graham said.

He had to stay a few blocks away waiting for the all clear so he could go lock up the office.  That happened around 9:00 p.m. Friday.

Also across the street from the plant is HoseFast Hydraulics.  Owner Rodney Brewer was back at work Saturday as he and workers were finishing up work they didn't get to finish on Friday.

"I was just taking care of customers out back," said Brewer.   "There was a loud explosion… everyone went to the front to see what's going on… A lot of chaos, people running, going different directions."

Video from one of Brewer's surveillance cameras caught the explosion as it happened.  Just beyond a white pick-up truck you see a flash, then immediately thick, black smoke and flames.

On Saturday, Nexeo Solutions issued the following statement:

The fire at Nexeo Solutions' Garland facility has been extinguished, and none of our employees received any injuries as a result of the incident.  We are working with the appropriate local, state and federal agencies to fully investigate and understand the cause of the fire so that we can prevent a similar incident in the future and ensure the safety of our employees and the surrounding community.
